Got a 42" Visio today. 1080, 120 hZ, 50,000:1 contrast ratio. WOW, beautiful.
I also get an additional 10 digital high def channels that the analog TV didn't get. Now I guess I'll have to upgrade to blu-ray.
Is it true that PS/3 plays those discs?

i read a few reviews on blu rays awhile back, and they said the player on the ps3 is actually comparable to mid level players, and isnt a low quality player.

I'm impressed with my DVD player that upconverts to 1080p, but i really want a blu ray.

I use my PS3 for both Blue Ray and standard DVD.

I came into the light 4-5 months ago. Now I have a 42" in my bedroom and a 55" in the living room, two dual channel HD dvr's and blu-ray... Some of the first stuff we watched just had us in awe. "Life HD" on the discovery channel... just stunning!

Just an FYI, get netflix and upgrade to blu-ray if you watch a lot of movies. Disc's are expensive and honestly, if your diligent about watching what gets sent, you can easily watch 8 movies a month. For $12, less than half the cost of one blu-ray disc.

We use the online capability of our blu-ray player just as much as we use it to watch discs. I had to run 80 feet of cat5, but it was worth it. We definitely use all of our $12 monthly netflix fee. Granted, the quality isn't blu-ray, but it's far better than old standard def.

Congrats and enjoy the picture, Ralph. I just bit the bullet and purchased 2 dedicated BluRay players (1 in the living room and 1 in the bedroom) as well as having an obsolete HD-DVD player. I'm going to upgrading to an HD satellite service as my local cable provider does not offer any HD programming.

One of the best movies for HD video and audio is Ironman. If finances allow, consider upgrading your audio as well for the uncompressed audio.

Does netflix do blueray? I've not seen any on there, not that I've looked though. I've never seen bluray, whats so special about it?

no hd on cable man your provider sucks. who is it. maybe the plant is so old it can't handle it. lol

So do I. The only thing I have noticed is games on the PS3 are loud and the movies are much quieter for some reason. I will have my plasma on 15-20 for games and movies require up to 50 or so on the volume I dont know why. Direct tv usually runs about 25 or so on the volume.

Congrats on the Hi Def makeover! I know I will never look back. Wait until you watch Sunday NFL footbal in HD... Wow! My wife swears she can't tell the difference between HD and standard def. I think she just doesn't like the cost of the monthly HD package myself. Enjoy my friend.

i noticed over the weekend that redbox now has blu-ray disks. i think they are only $1 just like the DVD's

My ex took the HiDef......

I am now going through withdrawl....

So Ralph, you like the 120Hz? I have read that it creates a weird texture to the picture. The Soap Opera Effect? That's my one real reservation when I get a new TV. I had no problem with the 60Hz Olevia I just parted with. I just don't want to buy something that I'll consider worse. On the up side, the one she took was 42". Now I can buy something bigger!

I have the phillips 42" 120hz lcd. I really like it. everything is really clear and sharp. the good thing about 120 hz is it displays motion a lot smoother. like a soccer ball flying across the field, race cars zooming by, or whatever you like to watch.

the only thing I've noticed is it has a problem with black and white, or dark and light colors.

example. a person with dark pants on, walking in a hallway with light colored floor or walls. it glitches. i also noticed it on something the other day where someone was wearing black and white checkered pattern pants.

i have gotten used to it, and it isnt that bad, but when its new, your picking up everything, and watching every little part to see how good it is.

The Hertz rate is the refresh rate of the screen. I noticed yesterday that a lot of the smaller ones, or cheaper ones were 60 Hz, and I knew already that I wouldn't be getting one of those. 120 is twice the refresh rate, so motion is a lot smoother. No jumpy looking movements. Some higher end models are now offering 240 Hz.
Apparently I did an incomplete scan last night, so I ran it again and came up with 31 digital channels with the Comcast cable. A few of them are empty, and about 5 will be blocked because they run shopping shows, but all together there are about 20 digital channels, and it is really an intense picture. I even watched golf yesterday since it looked like I was watching from the gallery. :D
I now get PBS in hi-def, and spent a couple of hours watching "Nature" documentaries, one on humming birds and another on Penguins. It almost made me cold, watching the ice flows. :hehe:

Yeah HD rocks. I recently got a set-top box with HD to hook up to my 42" plasma. I'm addicted to Discovery HD and NGC HD. :D I can't wait for football season to start so I can watch that in HD as well.

Did a lot of moving around today and mounted it on the wall. After taking this break, I'll be reconnecting my surround sound in a different configuration. After that, I'll be falling asleep in front of it. :hehe:

Welcome to HD Rolex! Tv will never be the same! I can't even watch none HD channels now! You might be able to turn down the refresh rate if u do have the sopa opra affect. Mine has a 240 refresh and I never even use half of it. It's good for high action sports ect if you use a faster rate compared to normal viewing everyday shows.

I'm not having a problem with the 120. It's seriously smooth.
TV changed forever, for me, about 14 years ago when I got the first surround sound system. Now, with a new surround system and a hi def TV, it puts it in even a better category. Can't wait for 3-D.

Does netflix do blueray? I've not seen any on there, not that I've looked though. I've never seen bluray, whats so special about it?

Yes. If you saw it, you'd know. They don't have it streaming, but they do mail the discs.

For one, the picture is clear to the point that you see hairs on peoples faces (peach fuzz on hot chicks) or that their hair is frizzed a bit. Second, I'm pretty sure every single blu-ray we have received is recorded with DTS real digital sound. Quite a difference compared to 5/7 channel normal digital.

I don't care for the 120hz setting on my LG, so I shut it off. Made TV look weird and I didn't notice it helping much of anything. I think the general refresh rate and quality of the panel itself is where you notice the pixelation and whatnot. Which mine has none of.

It sure is nice to sit and watch TV though. When I get the time.

I was like Rolex, TV became a whole new experience.
