I'm starting to make myself and foam model of a 1989 VW GTI. after that i plan to mold it out of fiberglass sheeting than do the details in Lightweight body filler. is there any downsides to doing this in fiberglass/filler? I've totally given up on the inside painting method. after many failed attempts on soda bottles. I've decided to go back to my 1:1 roots and do fiberglass and filler and painting the outside in 2 stage car paint.

fiberglass would add alot of weight and could crack very easy....lets say if you hit a curb

That's a lot of work and also a lot of damage when something goes wrong. The lid will almost shatter on impact, and the paint will rip off with every roll over.

Get a Lexan body, put on the window masks, spray it ONE color, back it with black or white, put on the stickers and run it. Don't fight with the details, just put on a nice looking cover that will protect your ride. That's what the lexan is for.

i have the time and the materials. just wanted to see what you guys thought. i already started it ill let you guys know how it came out. no reason to stop just cuz you guys dont agree.

you would be smart to pull a mold off your first finished body before painting. it will be easier in the longrun to make a new part rather than try to fix all the cracks and gouges from a spill. i have been doing fiberglass for over 10yrs now for a living, if you have any questions just hit me up, will be glad to help anyway i can.

If it comes out nice, you should save it just for a show cover.
If you have access to a vacuum table, you can make your own lexan lids using it as the master mold.

great joneser. i will definetly do that if i have some questions. yeah thats what i was planning on doing is making my finished product off of my first set piece of glass. then i was going to make all the detailing in body filler. and then do a nice 2-3 stage paint job. it will definetly be a nice show piece. but ill bash with the body that came with the car.

since i will be doing it with glass sheets and resin i dont think it will shatter? but I'm not to sure

THat would be a cool idea but you would crack it too easily a nice body tho but not too lasting you could use it as a show off tho

yeah thats definetly the idea behind it. i want something to show but I'm really not getting the hang of the inside painting lol. but I'm sure ill keep trying though

well try a small piece first and see if regular rc paint sticks on or go to like home depot and ask the best way to paint fiberglass as for the rest i think its just like a regular rc

yeah. thats why i came up with the idea. i have ALOT of 1:1 car paint. enough to make something wicked.
