My son Chase is only 5 but I think this will be good fun for both if us. We got started today and very slowly worked our way through steps 1 and 2. I mostly let him find the appropriate parts by matching part shapes and numbers. We focus on matching the part orientation to the pictures as well. We stopped after only a couple steps as I didn't want him to get bored. I think that was a good move cuz he's been bugging me about step three for hours .... Lol!!... rephrase that... as I type. :o) Nothing too special here. Picked up some inexpensive electronics today and dug up a Rd I think I bought from somebody here. A relatively simple build but pretty cool nonetheless.

very cool. enjoy the time! my 5 yr only wants to jump the slash off the skate ramp. haha

I built my daughter a TT-01 Tamiya kit a few years back with old radio gear and servos bought from members here. She slowly grew up (she's 15 now) and hasn't run the car in years. While driving my Savage earlier in the week the young kids in the neighborhood were all crowding around watching me. "Can I drive it" was heard numerous times.

So today, I dug out the Tamiya, threw an old NiCd stick pack in it and some fresh AA's in the transmitter and handed it off to the five year old and seven year old across the street. Taking five minute turns with it (after a short rundown on how to use, what the workings are, etc.) they had a blast until dark. The five year old's dad is a car guy like me and he came over and asked a bunch of questions. I think they'll be heading down to our Hobby Town real soon for a similar father/son build. Have fun with it, they grow up too fast (son is 17 now and says the Savage is annoying, I remember when he used to sneak it out before I got home from work!)

Nice. The pic of that thing made me go throw a BL setup back into my TT-01 onroad. Gona run it tomorrow.

I hope the timing is right for this. First thing he asked me this morning is if we could do page 3 (step 3) :) This is very exciting for me.

IMO you should be fine. Just stay electric. For some reason both of my boys started being easily scared by loud things around that age so they didn't like the nitros at all.

My sons is also freaked out by nitro. Enjoy the build and let's see some pics when its done. There's nothing like spending some quality time with your kids.

Funny you mention that. Chase asks for earplugs when he's outside when I'm cutting the grass.

It's been very satisfying thus far. We did step 3 and 1/2 of step 4 this evening. Of course these are normally 5 minute jobs but keep in mind he's only 5 years old and I let him pick out all the necessary parts, including the proper screws and such. It's a lot of fun watching him figure stuff out. I'm sooooo glad I never sold this car. :)

We'll see Beason.... He wants a red car, but he wants green on it. I'm sure I can figure some way to incorporate the colors he wants into a slick looking paint job. Personally, I'm not big on red/green but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

The guts of it are pretty much finished. The plastic aero parts still need to be installed as well as all of the electronics and of course the body.

Somehow we lost a wheel nut the other day. I don't understand why I cannot find it, I've found smaller items on the carpet. So I went ahead and ordered some as well as a couple other things. The AM Rx that I purchased second-hand really does need to have it's antenna replaced so I got that and also an HPI 4-cell stick pack. Chase has had a Wheelie King for a couple years now and he does a decent job of driving it but ya'll know how much different on-road is so I figure 4.8 volts will be plenty for him. Started cutting out the body yesterday... there's quite a bit of work there as there are about five parts to it I think. Chase is really into red these days so that'll certainly end up the main color. I don't think I'm gonna go to crazy on the paint job.

I may have to build one of these for myself.. With a little more power of course :)

Big props to you Lessen, you're an awesome Dad. You'd be surprised how many don't have the patience to try and teach their kids something like this. I'm a big F1 fan, so I'm interested to see the finished product for sure.

That's just awesome Josh! Great project, I'm sure both of you will really enjoy doing this together. I enjoy the time I spend with my sons in this hobby more than any other time spent in this hobby.

I'm willing to bet that this will be a perfect first on road car for your son. 4.8 volts + HPI = totally durable.:) That thing just looks plain tough, for being a F1 and all.:) Awesome project.

Very cool Lessen. Can you pick up a spare body and have the boy paint it? I had my girls do a buggy body once and they loved it.
