I think it was about 5-6 years ago that I got a strange phone call from Harte Hanks in San Diego, CA. At the time I was still a little wet behind the ears and I didn't really see any harm in giving the information they were asking for. They just wanted basic information about our computer systems. They wanted to know bands and numbers and crap like that.

About 6-8 months later, they called again. This time I got annoyed by them wasting my time and told them to never call me again. To make a really really really long story short, this company has never left me alone. Here I am working here for going on 8 years and I want to say I've made about two dozen attempts to tell the freaks to stop calling.

Today they called saying they were "CI Technology Database". They were still from San Diego and they still wanted the same information. I cornered the girl on the phone and asked for the mailing address. She didn't know what if was. Then I asked if she knew how she got to work each day. Surely, she must know the street or something. She didn't know anything. I guess she drives to work with blinders on. I did squeeze out of her that "CI Technology Database" and Harte Hanks were indeed the same company.

Over the past years, I've dreamt up some interesting ideas to get back at them.

Telemarketer Type Chic: "How many computers are in your company?"
Me: "Depends, what are you wearing?"

or maybe start the survey and in the middle say: "Man, does all this computer talk make you horny? My hard drive is on fire."

or maybe pickup the phone and say: "oh god not you again!" and then put them on hold and tell the secretary to in form them that they can't call me anymore because I just jumped out of a window and killed myself.

After the encounter from a few minutes ago, I looked up their company and I have a good bit of info including an address and phone number. I was thinking I could call them and ask: "I need to talk to your database administrator immediately! Your company's database is being leaked on the Internet!!" Then if I get someone I could start off with: "So, how many computers are in your company?" and then just repeat more questions from their survey when he acts all confused.

This place has been ticking me off consistently for 6 years. I've tried telling them on the phone to purge my number from their database and they always say ok but then they come calling again in a few months. I think my next step is to try and snail mail them a request to remove them from their database. I think I'll send it certified.

Any other suggestions? Has anyone else been bothered by these asses that want to waste your time with a lame-o servey?

Are you on a State or National 'Do not call' list? If you get on one, it's usually 30 days before it becomes official. When they call, ask them to place you on THEIR no call list, and inform them that you are on a State or National 'No Call List. After having been informed of that, they can now be FINED for calling you. Each call raises their fine. Trust me. It will stop.
I'm not sure about the national list, but a state Do not call list can be done on the internet.

Call lists are great, if you don't want to get on one or wait, go to the local police supply store and get one of those whistles they use to direct traffic and such. When they call just blow the thing into the phone.

I did that telemarketing crap when I was younger (I know, I'm sorry... I was a fundraisor for the special olypics though, not sooo bad..but still...I know and appologize..lol and all ya gotta do is say "Please remove me from your mailing list" and by law (federal law) they can't call you back again, and if they do, you can sue them (If your sue happy..lol). Thats something you could threten them with though, and let em know ya dont want to talk to them.

Or else you could just bring the phone in the bathroom with ya.. Thats what I do and its always fun to hear there responces..lol...

Maybe I need to do some leagal research then. I have said that sooooo many times to these people -- probably 23 times out of the last 24 times.

I think I may look into that no call list too.

It might sounds like I'm over reacting, but it's been going on for years and years!!!

I use HH, ATT, and several others as a source of entertainment.
Remember, they called you. This gives you the right to say anything you would like short of threatening physical harm.

With the HH folks I always make a deal with the phone person to answer one of my questions for every one of theirs. It starts off nice and goes down hill from there. With women it usually goes in the direction of daily hygean in the nether regions and the effects on their panties. With men it usually goes where no man has gone before and why they are afraid to talk about it.

Have a little fun, some play along just to get answers to meet their quota.

How often does HH call you FastEddy? I wanna say once a quarter or something. The question for a question thing has crossed my mind but I've never had the balls to do it cause there are several folks that are close enough to hear my phone calls.

I've been on the 'Do not call' list for 3 1/2 years now. A month after signing up, everything stopped.
2 months ago I started getting from 1 to 3 calls per day, 6 days a week, from an 888 number that only showed up on ID as "Toll Free Number".
If the answering machine got it, the message was blank. If I answered it, there was nothing.
Finally, after 3 weeks of running for the phone so many times, and getting nothing, I called the # on the caller ID.
IT WAS MY OWN PHONE COMPANY!!! after waiting for 20 minutes on hold, I finally got a human. It was the sales and promotions dept.
I was extremely insistent that I wanted it stopped, yet she still tried to tell me about their promotions. I kept cutting her off and telling her I didn't want to hear it.
A week later, it started again, with a different #, and Atlanta, Georgia in the caller ID.
Same thing, different tactic.
This time, I was LESS than polite. She even tried to tell me what web page to go to, and I told her I was not about to waste my time with any company's site that badgered me to the extent that they did, and finally hung up.
Last week it started again, this time with a recording that it was Bell South Promotions Dept.
Now, from what I've found out, if it's a company you currently deal with, a charity or a political organization, they are exempt from the 'Do Not Call'.
When the call, you have to ask THEM to remove your number.
