So I went ahead with the pull start. I got everything set up and went to pull it and it doesn't start, I have been pulling for about 5 minutes and still nothing. When I tilt the truck fuel comes out of the exhaust? I'm assuming this is normal as the fuel isnt burning? Also, I checked the glowplug and it glows bright orange, but the igniter had only been charging for 5 hours. How many pulls does it usually take to start a brand new engine?
 
Sounds like you're way too rich. Check your needle settings, and lean down a hair at a time until it starts, then richen it back up till it just barely runs. Break in from there.
 
ok got it running but it only stays running for about 5 seconds and then shuts off. I am thinking a fuel delivery problem as the fuel line is sometimes empty after it dies. When I was pull starting it I knocked off the back pressure fuel line. If this gets knocked off could that be the problem? I'm charging my igniter again as I was out there for awhile and sometimes I left it on when it didnt need to be.

Yup. Altho the line is more of a vent for the tank (so it doesn't implode, in theory... The engine doesn't provide that much suction) than a pressure line. However, the exhaust does provide minimal pressure, which does aide in drawing fuel.
 
ok for some reason there was some fuel in the pressure line ( I think from when I was running rich is was seeping in) I cleared the line and installed it again. The engine started and stayed idle for 1 or 2 seconds longer. There were air bubbles in the fuel line but I got rid of those, still starts but immediately dies after 3-5 seconds. Any ideas?

Idle up, or perhaps lean the low end needle just a hair. Like 1/32nd of a turn. Not much, you'd be amazed how little affects these little engines.
 
I can only get it often every so often, I dont think the glow plug is getting the charge it needs. I will take the glow plug out, hold it with pliers, and stick it in the igniter and it glows bright orange. It also feels very warm on the end that sticks into the igniter. When the plug is in the engine I will leave the igniter in for about 5 seconds and take it out and touch the glow plug with my pinky finger and still feels cold?

Beware I'm still a noob. What I am doing it pulling the igniter spring back and placing it over the plug and letting the spring on the igniter go so it locks, is this right?
 
You're doing everything correctly. You're probably just flooding the engine. Too much fuel, not enough air, and the engine won't start. Even though you probably don't want to, you will have to lean it down to get it to start, then adjust the needle so the temperatures stay in the 210-220 range.
 
I got the engine to start and idle, I got it to start with about 1.5 turns from the closed position and the manual says 2. With 1.5 turns there is still fuel being shot out of the exhaust?

Also, when I pull teh throttle on the transmitter the servo movies correctly and I can see the carbuerator opening, but the gear on the crankshaft doesn't rotate?

ok so the gear wasn't rotating on the crankshaft when I would pull the throttle so I took off the engine and manually rotated the flywheel and the gear was rotating with the flywheel. Could it be the way the gears were meshed?
 
The clutch bell will be stationary, or near stationary, under idle. That's by design. However, the gears are supposed to turn easily when you apply throttle. See if you can roll the truck with the throttle at neutral. If you can, then all is well.
 
Just got done putting together a kit and put an os engine in with a pullstart. I got it to start but something is screwed up with the gear on the crankshaft. It wont spin when I pull the throttle, but I can see the flywheel spinning, any ideas?
 
Yes it is, I opened it up and I noticed I put the clutch shoe in upside down, so I flipped it over and put everything back on, before I could try it out I pulled the recoil starter out completely, so I ordered a new one should be here friday. Could the clutch shoe being upside down be the culprit?
 
Alright I got my car started again after I put a new pull starter in and flipped the clutch shoe, and it still wont go out of idle?
 
wow, your having a string of luck there huh.. ok so you got the clutch on right, and you got the rope back on. now you say it wont go above idle? so when you pull the trigger the engine doesn't rev up? did you reconnect the throttle linkage after replacing the engine? does the servo move? maybe take some closeup pics of your setup and see if we can see anything obvious
 
sorry if I wasn't clear enough, teh throttle moves everything is fine with the servo. When I pull on the throttle the engine revs, but the clutch bell does not rotate leaving the car just sitting there.

ps. same engine, just bought a new pull start for it ($30)
