So i have a hpi firestorm with nitro star g3.0 in it bought the motor online been a great motor so far but the thing is the specs on motor say the temp should get up around 210 230 but i can't get my motor past 200 the highest temp i reach is 180 185 and this is after 2 or 3 hsp's. if i lean out my hsn anymore the car stalls at full throttle richen at 1/16 increments till it will run wide open. lsn tuned good engine speeds up and dies at 3 seconds but 185 is the highest temp i can get. I've just finished running 1 gal of 20% torco thru it. when the tires dont spin out it will damn near cut a back flip.

First is you idle gap between 0.5 and 1mm (the thickness of a credit card). The next question is where are you taking your temp readings? You should be taking them right at the glow plug.

What are your outside temps? If it's really cold, you may have to wrap the head.

Yeah it's probably too cold out. If it is like 40 or 50°f out you need to wrap the head. Don't be bashful with the wrapping either, it'll stay cool enough just by running with a proper tune and cool air entering the carb. I usually wrap at least 3/4 of the cooling head.

You should never really tune by engine temps and always have a trail of smoke. Where I live in Colorado my outdoor temps can vary 20 degrees each time I run my trucks. As the other guys have said Wrapping the lower half of the engine with foil will help to run in really cold temps.

To compensate for a lean mixture at idle you can adjust your LSN to a richer mixture and increase your idle speed on your radio.

Once temps drop below 50 degrees outside I park my Nitros for the winter.

Hope this helps ;)

Also make sure the "eye" of your temp gun is clean and the batteries are fresh, either of those two will give false readings on the low side.

Not to jack your thread but why temp at the glow plug? I usually temp at the cooling head by moving the temp gun around the cooling head and seeing where to hot spot is. If I temp at the glow plug, its usually 15 to 20 degrees cooler. If you're not getting your temps up its probably from being too rich somewhere or its really cold out. You also have to compensate for your altitude and humidity. Another sign you're too rich is when you're running the engine, does fuel spray out of the exhaust pipe?

thanks everyone but i live in louisiana about 100 north of the water. temp outside when i was running last was around 68 plenty warm enough for motor to get hot. i take my temp at the glow plug and is around 180 185 temp on head will be 205 to 210. idle gap is set small as possible i actually have to give it a little throttle to start it or it wont but when running idles perfect. the performance of the motor keeps me from leaning out hsn any more bc it will cut out at wot. when i first crank it it usually has fuel coming out just as any cold rc motor but once it gets warmed up no fuel. I have read tho that you will get a slightly cooler temp when running torco fuel. once the car is warm smoke trail looks great always have smoke and when i punch it gives a good puff of blue smoke this is my only rc car just got into the hobby about 6 months ago so i dont have another car to tune and see how it goes. the car runs great tho its not just easy to keep it going in a straight line

You need to completely forget this business if thinking that it needs to run the temp that the instructions say it should. Go put that temp gun in the house and leave it there. Your wot passes are probably falling off because you are not putting enough fuel in it. Keep increasing the HSN until the engine starts to bog a little and then back it off a little and leave it there. Torco fuel is not going to burn any cooler than any other fuel because all it is is methanol, nitro , and oil just like all fuels are.

sounds good to me from all the stuff about tuning I've read you nvr tune to temp and i know that i was just wanting some thought on this. from reading about tuning and everything i feel my engine is at peek performance i mean there isnt anything else i can do to get more out of it anymore and it just boggs so I'm happy with it right where it is i was just wondering about the temp tho bc I've read that running them at to low of a temp can cause premature engine wear due to the sleeve expansion

Right, always start rich

Wrong: Torco fuel is not going to burn any cooler than any other fuel because all it is is methanol, nitro , and oil just like all fuels are.

Less oil content means less heat, even if it's only 1% less oil. I would say 210° with Torco fuel on a 70° day is about right, but you need to use the temp gun for it's real purpose......making sure the engine isn't too hot or too cool. Always tune for performance and go rich whenever you're in doubt. Extreme Rc Mods gave you a very good tuning guide that works.

Also a higher nitro content with less oil helps temps as well due to the fact of with higher nitro you run the engine richer than with less nitro content. I run 30% with 10% oil in my big block and she usually stays around 210-216.

So is torco saying that their fuel runs cooler than other fuels because it contains 14% oil?

Any fuel with less oil will run cooler. When I switched from top fuel to O'donnell's it was like night and day, and that was a 2% difference in oil. I'm not going to say any actual numbers, but on average my engines ran cooler. Now I run Byron's which has 4% less, and I'll never look back.:D

You should try the werks 30% fuel, if you knew the actual oil content it would blow your mind!

Well thank you for your knowledge and for correcting me because I guess I really didn't know how oil effected the burn temp. I also run Bryon's 25% and I don't have a problem with running too hot. I just don't know who told this fella that Turco ran cooler and according to what you have said, it should run hotter because it contains 14%.

Yes, more oil becomes more hotter. I used 25% nitro fuel with 9% oil. more cooler. and more power. only thing is you have to tune it properly when not or when your tune is on the lean side your engine life will be shorter.

That 14% Torco will run a bit hotter than Byron's, but maybe the Op had been using something with more oil before switching to Torco.

Byrons only has 4% oil in it?
