I got a RC10GT Factory Team for Christmas which I am starting to put together. I need to get an engine and radio and I'm not sure what to go with. I am hoping to spend around $120 for an engine and I want to get something I can race a little if I decide to. Any suggestions? For the radio I am probably going to go with the Futaba 2PL but should I get a high torque servo for the steering servo? I assume a basic servo will work fine for throttle. Also, I put in the steering servo saver and it's movement seems a little stiff, is that normal? It's not hard to move but it doesn't move freely and there is some resistance. Is that normal? Tonight I will start on the transmission and hopefully have the car done in a few days. Thanks for any help with these questions.

Matt

i would suggest either,

o.s. cv-r .12 (i think the pullstart version is cv-rx if you dont have a starter box)
mugen mt12

-yes youve got it right a standard servo works just fine for the throttle, brakes.for steering a high torque servo would definatly be nice anything with 75 or more torque should do fine (seeing as its not lugging a huge monster truck around :radio: )

-yes sometimes the steering servos are a little stiff they usually get looser after you get running it. if you dont like how it feel you can get the MIP BBsteering system and put a regular servo horn servo save (mouthful :-P)

and most all have fun! :hammer:

Thanks for the reply. The OS .12 CVRX was one of the engines I was looking at. The others being the comparable OS .18 or the Associated .12 or .15 engines. If I am thinking about racing a little do I need to keep a .12 in there or can I have a bigger engine? Do the .12 racing engines pack a bigger punch than most of the .15 and .18 engines anyway? Although I want to keep my racing option open my main concern right now is whipping my friends T-Maxx on our home-made tracks. Thanks.

Matt

yes to race a .12 is required although, some tracks allow you to use .15s just cheack with your local track,if not the .12s will normally (in a ST ) power past most monster trucks. i dont think a .18 is legal for any of the standard truck classes, although I've heard some might good things about bashing with them.

i say go with OS CV-R for tunablity and parts availability..i personally run one as well as an OS HYPER .12 (which is no longer available)..nothing bad about the mugens but they do tend to have a bit more power than most people can handle (even an experienced driver)..CV-R's have a smooth powerband..

my next suggestion would be... 1.) MIP heavyweight flywheel.. 2.) MIP 4in1 clutch (around $25 for both)...unless you go with the 4 shoe clutch setup...use the heavyweight flywheel only if you are using a bump box

also if you want to get a litle more lowend out of the motor take the "manifold" and cut about 1/8"-3/16" off (on the end that the coupler fits on to) and it will compliment the CV-R nicely

hope this helps

Thanks again for the help. I will probably go with the OS CR-V .12 due to availability but I will look into the Mugen also. I will also look into doing the mods that biggy recommended.

Your steering should be free with no binding when a servo is not connected.
If there is resistance or binding you need to go back to the bench and find out why.
There isn't much need for a super high torque servo on the front. As listed above, 75 should do just fine. I would spend a little more and get a servo with BB MG. (Ball-bearing & Metal gears.)

Another useful up grade is a radio box. RPM make a great one for a reasonable price.

i agree with eddy about the servo, should be a strong MG BB servo, I've tryed using regular rtr servos for the steering and stripped two of them out. torque not being issue here just a good strong servo, alot of force is applied to the steering when running in grass or hard turns on high traction surfaces. id also recommend a wide bumper from RPM, you can always remove when racing but adds alot of protection from some of those undesired hard front end landings. RPM makes a lot of high quality parts for the rc10gt. recommend there bulkheads to as the stock ones tend to break easily. personally I'm running aluminum bulks but with the rpm stuff you can save yourself some weight. may want to look into there RPM A-arm set also. heres a pic for some refference btw I'm using a Hitec 625 mg servo and have not had any problems yet, but if you can afford it i say get something a little faster. HS-625MG @ 6Volts rated @ speed 0.15 with 94 oz of torque, try and get a servo with speed rating of .11 or so if your planning on racing...EDIT: sry got off topic there but the mill I'm running is a side exaust Novarossi CX-12 and my GT pulls wheelies in the mid power range. i have read that novarossi and os mills are choice when it comes to racing... sry for the longpost

those are sweet wheels, where did you find em?I tear up all the wheels I've ever tried so I'm looking for something strong to race with.
sorry for robbing your thread snmhanson, ill agree with the o.s..12,i made the mistake of getting a .15 sirio rear exhaust race motor and allthough very fast its to hard to control and loops out cause of the power where my sons .15 rtr motor is smooth and controlable.

Instead of that motor you should just get a .12 cvr for $110.00 .The OS is more powerful and more reliable.
