Forum members,

My son built a Yokomo YD-2E-S 2WD RWD Drift Car Kit last year and he‘s been running it with a 30 year old Twister 540 brushed motor and Hobbywing brushed ESC. Actually he has a Traxxas XL5 ESC running that motor right now. The only upgrade we’ve done in that time is to swap the gyro it came with to a Yokomo DP-302 V4. The Brushed motor now needs new brushes so I was thinking to upgrade it to a brushless setup. We’re looking for a 10.5 turn motor and ESC combo that is sensored. I have been considering the Hobbywing XR10 Justock G3 Sensored Brushless ESC/SD G2.1 Motor Combo (10.5T) sold on Amain Hobbies for about $109. The reason why I am considering this combo is the low price, Hobbywing is good qaulity, and it is sensored. The downside is the motor has fixed timing and also the ESC has fixed timing, although I’m not sure that will matter.

So considering my son is only 12 years old, he doesn't compete, there are no drift car tracks or clubs in the Worcester MA area, and we just drift it at the local skate park, or in our garage, I think this combo may hit the sweet spot. So before I pull the trigger, I’m tapping into the Forums knowledge base here and asking if anyone knows of any other combos, or even separate components worthy of consideration? The price can go higher, however remember he‘s 12 and not ready for crazy competition equipment plus the car itself is not high end. Links to the equipment/car are listed below:

Thanks,

I forgot to mention we do have on hand a Castle 1410 3800 sensored motor which is equivalent to a 12 turn motor. The 10.5 turn motor is equivalent to a 4500 kv motor.

Since he's only 12, Id just use that Castle 3800kV with the Hobbywing ESC you mentioned. If it were my drift car I probably wouldnt use a 4 pole motor over a 2 pole. Also, If hes still new to drifting something closer to a 13.5T is probably better anyway. 10.5T takes a bit more throttle control. That being said, you can compensate for either to a big extent with gearing. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the insight Graywolf. I had a cheap $50 sensored Hobbywing ESC that I had forgotten about sitting around so he got excited and put it together last night with the 3800 motor. He tried it in the garage and it works very good. The ESC is a little on the large side though so we may eventually sway that out.

For those that don’t know the difference between a 2 pole motor and 4 pole motor. https://www.competitionx.com/the-rc-doctor/brushless-motors-2-pole-vs-4-pole/
