I figure since I have the savage in pieces now, I should work on all that needs it. Is the transmission something I should check on, clean or anything?

I would check the two speed mechanism in the trans.

I did the same thing. Had the truck all apart, decided to look at the guts of the trans. I'm glad I did. The gear for 2nd had a chunk out of it where the metal plate fastens to it and the metal plate was rubbing the inside of the trans case.

It still worked that way, but who knows for how long.

Same thing happened to me except I could feel the second gear metal plate rubbing the trans case. It was dragging my drivetrain. It seems as though it is fairly common for that plate to work its way loose on the stock gear.

I would install this redesigned second gear:

If you don't want to upgrade second gear then you should at least install a second engagement pin in the stock second gear. Just install it in the empty hole opposite the one pin that is already there.
