by throwing the matc hat the gas, the match is most likely going out from wind or the impact of it hitting the ground. Gas will lightin almost all conditions.

That episoide of Mythbusters, they used both a device to drop matches and an ingniter system. Neither one produces a fire/explosion in a controll enviroment designed to cause a fire. There test was to see what was causing gas stations to blow up. This was not because some idiot was spraying the joints down with gas....it was because the vapors released by pumping the gas into their car. Also, keep in mind your car will not fire with liquid gas in the motor. It has to be a mixture in the forum of vapor. Then it was ignited by static electricity. Anyways, it's not worth arguing over lol If you really feel the way you do about this, just try droping lit matches in the drive way WITH OUT fuel. Just keep in mind if they stay lit, don't let the wind blow them into a field some where. Also if your a minor, I would have an adult with me before trying this.

I guess we should write the Mythbuster and have them to a skit on this one

It's igniting the vapors of the gasoline. About 15 years ago my friends and I stoopidly tried to ignite some gasoline with lit cigarettes like in the movies. Didn't work, we tossed 5 or 6 of them at the puddle and they all went out. BUT, after some time went by the vapors from the gasoline had accumulated enough so that when my friend went next to the puddle with a book of matches, it ignited instantly when he struck the match and burned his eyebrows off. It was a heck of an orange firebomb.

The same thing goes for gasoline....it's all about the vapors. As long as the can of gas is well vented you can throw matches at it all day long. That is if you got that many matches to hold out all day with.

this is what my post was mostly about. how would a can of gas be better vented than a open air barbque? the barbque is completely open toped & vented at the bottom

EDIT: nevermind I'm sure it will be said that in the barbque the gas is in a thin layer with a lot of vapors

Which was **my** reason for asking for a video (and I don't really expect anyone to DO that, that's just crazy.) Gasoline being a high viscosity fluid, the vapors begin to rise almost instantly at room temperature.

This is just nuts. If you guys claim you can throw a lit match at a puddle of gasoline and it won't burn, either you are supermen or live in some universe that has different laws of physics than the one I do. Cause I will tell you, several times this year I've dumped about an OUNCE of gasoline on a pile of wet leaves and thrown a match at it from about 10 feet - it has lit up every time.

The reason you can do this with nitromethane (PURE, not nitro FUEL, the alcohol in fuel WILL combust) is because inherently it is not all that flammable. Once it begins to burn it burns hot, but slow (because of the low viscosity.) It needs a catalyst to begin the burning, in our case alcohol, in top fuels, a little alcohol and an electric spark. The explosive burst of power we get out of our engines is due to the nitro burning under compression combined with the heat of combustion, which is where nitromethane becomes unstable.

I'm neither, but that doesn't mean it's not true. Think about it, you're right, gasoline does evaporate fast, but it has to be concentrated enough to ignite. If I pour a puddle of gas on my driveway and flick matches at it, chances are it won't ignite. Now, I put a bucket over the puddle, light a match then throw it under the bucket, chances are it would.

In no way am I saying that a puddle NEVER will ignite, only that it is unlikely to ignite (provided none of the factors that AJ brings up, because he knows everything).

I was very curious about this, so I did some basic searching and the concensus out there is that gasoline liquid will not ignite, it is the vapors that ignite. Here's one quote I pulled from www.cartalk.com:

There is no explosive capabilities of gasoline, especially in liquid form.

Gasoline is flammable when it is in a gaseous form (not a liquid) this is why if you put gasoline on concrete and burn it then look at it from the ground you will notice the flames hovering over the gas. This is because the vapor is burning. You can also drop a burning match (from a few feet high) into a cup of gasoline where it will be extinguished by the gasoline.

Old gas is still flammable.

This thread has been more funny that informative. At least for me anyway.. A puddle of gas, toss a match in and the match will go out??? Uh huh..lol.. :asses the newest Darwin award winner his trophy:: Were not talking about Farts here, were talking about Gasoline! I think you might have it mixed up with Diesel. Diesel you can drop a match to and it wont "woof" and is hard to light. But if you have a fire, and throw diesel onto it, then youll get the "woof" and the gasoline explosion effect. It needs the oxygen.

Nitro burns slower, and the flame is blue. It doesn't do the same "woof" like gasoline does. At least when I throw my bags of nitro (After cleaning my airfilter) into the burning barrel anyway.

Also its pretty simple. Most stuff that burns isnt gonna be healthy for you to breathe in. No matter if its gas, or sticks. So if your easily eritated by that stuff, dont go around it. Kinda like if ya got asthma, dont smoke.

Thank you 4u, I thought I was going insane. Which I probably am, but that's another topic. Just to clarify (again) my comments about burning nitro refer to nitromethane in it's pure form, not nitro fuel. The alcohol in nitro fuel indeed burns quickly.

Nitric acid = very bad.... so load up your cars with gasohol (gas & methanol) so you can smog the people behind you with formaldehyde fumes.

all i want to know if nitro fuel has any affect on your health because
I've got a heart problem .

wen i was 8months old i had to undergo a major opertion on my heart it was life and death sitiuation. the opertion was called the switch i think anyway.
when i was born the great vellsels in my heart was the wrong way round so the opertion was to simply to switch them around i died in operating theater then they brought me back to life dont ask me how they just did hard to belive but it true i was left with a leaky vave.. i will have to undergo another major operation in the coming months/years not sure of the exact date to fix my leacky valve....

does nitro fuel and nitro powerd cars have any affect on my health in the long run . ??? i thought it would have a different affect on me because of my health.. but i dont know

YES it can cause long term illness. Id ask your primary Doctor maybe bring them a list . almost everything we put our hands on can cause illness years later(same with breathing fresh air)

I worked with a guy that smoked a marlboro while pouring from a 5 gallon gas can into a pressure washer. I just stood back and watched the show. Figured it wouldnt go off but with the air being blocked by houses, it was a just in case.
