Definitely looks at the parts that are breaking to see if you can upgrage them. While it may not seem like you're hard on it, bumping along at 40 mph in something with 3 or 4 inch tires that weighs 5 or 10 pounds is stressful.
Also, consider your buggy, and if it would be cheaper to upgrade your buggy, or to sell it and buy a more durable buggy. I'm not into 1/8 scale buggies so I can't give a lot of advice, but these are general guidelines that apply to all of RC.
Also, maybe determine whats causing the failure. If you fix the symptoms, but dont treat the illness, the symptoms will come back. RC's will break parts, but most of my rigs can take quite a bashing before breaking parts because I spent my money upgrading the weak links, and didn't spend money replacing parts that didn't need to be replaced. A lot of people spend 100s on blong, but don't do anything to make the rig more durable, then they wonder why the rig breaks after they spent all that money on bling. I know this isn't the case with you, I'm just saying that if you spend your money wisely, you will be investing in a very durable rig. Spending wisely also means that if you have $400 in your buggy, and it's going to cost $500 to make it durable, but you can buy a better quality buggy for $500, and then sell your rig and put $150 in parts replacing the weak links, you have to decide which makes more sense economically.
If you don't THOROUGHLY enjoy working on your RC, then you're going to have a hard time enjoying this hobby. Fixing, Tweaking, dialing in, setting up, upgrading, and replacing parts is a huge aspect of hobby grade RC, and if you don't like to do those things, I don't see how you wouldn't burn out pretty fast.
If you want something that you can bash the hell out of without breaking and without much maintenance, you should consider getting an HPI Baja 5B SS. If you can afford it, and they aren't a lot more than building an 1/8 scale buggy, you will have a blast with it. I've been beating on mine since April, and I've done $4 worth of damage so far. Parts will break if you push it hard enough, but its by far the most durable RC that I've ever seen, with the Traxxas slash next in line.
