hey there, i'm still kinda new to rc in general, but quickly learning! i recently had my rear diff blow out and my tranny lock up. it was my bevel gears in the diff...one of them split into 3 pieces. the tranny was victim to one of the set screws to adjust the shift point...it came loose and destroyed all the plastic gears, and damaged the metal ones a little bit...i think the metal ones are salvage able tho. i have a stock 2 speed 21 tranny...and i ebayed a 3 speed set...i thought i was getting a complete assembled tranny.
my questions about this senario are: is there supposed to be any kind of lubrication inside the tranny? do i need to put any lube on the ring and pinion gears? i bought a diff unit out of a x, so i know it has grease in the diff itself. last question....i have heard of them, but not seen them! LOCKERS! where can i get some? i have a feeling that this truck will not truly be as much fun as it can be without them! ...as with any off road truck in general :breakdown :wasted:

Lockers actually tear up the drive line. Especially for jumping and pavement/high traction areas.

There are a few companies that make them though. Most people only put one in the rear diff.

Ok, I thought a few companies, but that's the only one I can find quickly...

I lied, here's a couple more:

The trans shouldn't need any lube, but I use white lightning wax lube. It comes in a squirt bottle you have to shake up and it leaves a white residue of wax on the parts. I use that in the trans and on the ring/pinion gears in the diffs. Also, most run silicone diff oil in the diffs. If you want something that is more like posi-traction as opposed to a locked diff, go with a high weight oil like OFNA 50K. It's what I run and as a basher, I like it.

I have a locker in my truck, all I can say is it depends on where you run and your driving style on wether or not you would like it. If you run on loose dirt, sand, gravel etc. and if you like to swing the rear out on exiting turns or if you want to do wild donuts, then you will like it. If you run on firm ground, grass or asphalt, it isn't worth a darn except for stripping wheel hubs. The front will push and understeer very badly. You can try it out very inexpensively like I did, buy a ring and pinion for about $10 and then you just fill the diff with epoxy or JB weld. I'm still running mine, give it a try for yourself!

Unless you are a crawler or a dragster, using a locker will do nothing but give you less control. It gives you actually too MUCH traction. I tried it on my Savage and it did nothing but make handle like crap.I wound up using higher weight diff oil. I also would not do it as my diff cup showed wear in it.

Play with the diff oils rather than locking them up.

i've heard people talk about diff oil...is that inside the diff cup with the bevel gears? do you use oil or grease? and how much? is any needed on the pinion and ring gears outside the cup? thanks for any help and info u can supply to me!

I've noticed that my old diff cup has some damage, and the bevels are torn up too. can i still fill the cup with jb weld or purchas a locker and use that diff to experiment on?

how much oil goes in, just till its full? when i tore down my old broken one, it was more like grease in there...could that have been a bad gasket and alot of wear?
