I was cleaning up some old wheels and noticed a big difference in design on my traxxas slash wheels versus just about every other SCT wheel i have. I'm wondering, can i mount a non-traxxas tire with a non-traxxas insert on traxxas wheels? or will the difference in internal design mess up tire and make it perform poorly?

Shouldn't really matter. I used Traxxas wheels with Proline Hyrax's. And today I'm getting in the same Traxxas wheels and I'll be mounting up Schumacher tires with de racing inserts. Haven't noticed anything with mounting them that is different.

I guess i'm curious because i'm oval racing with these and i don't want to put a good set of tires on a wheel that's only going to give me problems. I have concerns that this difference might make the tires perform poorly or unexpectedly.

Open cell or close cell foam inserts? I'm sure closed cell foam inserts not shaped for Traxxas wheels would be less desirable. Tires folding over more than usual would be my concern while trying to hold a line.

Well I got closed cell inserts coming in today for Traxxas wheels. I'll see how they work once I get to the workbench tonight or tomorrow. If they don't seem right I'll probably keep the Traxxas wheels and just get a set of my regular DE racing Trinidad wheels.

I would think there's gotta be someone, where you are planning on racing, that has done some wheel/insert testing. High speed dirt oval and taller sidewall tires... a part of me would want to use open cell foams, but on the other hand, closed cell foams may get you less grip and mellow things out 🤷‍♂️. Ask the fast guys at the track :thumbs-up:;).

What about just for off-road racing? (Especially carpet?) Sorry OP for taking over the thread, just need some info

Well got them in today after school. Went on fine. Ill see how they preform on the track. Should be able to go this weekend (finally!). If not probably not till December.

(haven't glued them yet)
And when mounting them up I realized I should wipe them down because there's some chemical on the rubber I guess making it look gray instead of like the normal black rubber.

Edit: OHHH ok. I see what yall talking about. The foam would be un-even inside on the wheel.

Wash the wheels and tires with dawn, or dish soap, to get all the chemicals and releasing agents off before gluing.

Hey I would advise against using those foams with those wheels. I had a set of those wheels with a closed foam slick and ruined the tires. Now that I have taken them apart after days of acetone fumes I can see the foams collapsed in the cavity and made the wheel carcass all misformed.

I've been using Simple Green or Mean Green at full strength with great results before gluing, or acetone. I have no racing back round, just backyard bashing and track. I have only recently started running closed cell inserts after being so disappointed by the open cell used in pretty much every rtr tire. The worst is the large scale stuff, Xmaxx, Kraton 8s.. I mean $150 a set and the inserts fall apart before the tire even wears out? Junk. Even more insulting is the fact that no one sells just the inserts. Proline MX43 or Jconcepts Chopper bead locks all come with open cell inserts, for $200?! WTF? At least Proline sells the components seperately, Jconcepts, nope. Sorry for the rant.

Inserts? Closed cell foams I'm sure is preferred for carpet.

Get yourself a set of those ”virtually every other brand” type of wheels. They are available with different offsets, double-check this to avoid buying the wrong type.

Doing a little more research here. People say that Traxxas wheels can only fit traxxas tires and traxxas inserts due to traxxas having the step down inserts and dual profile design wheel.

Makes me question it. Since I seen a couple guys run the same setup I got with these wheels for the tires I have and with the inserts the proline (hyrax) came with and they and I don't have any issues.

This is what my inserts did. They tucked into the gap there. There's no support for them. Maybe someone makes an insert for Traxxas wheels?

It's hard to tell in the first picture but the tire is NOT in a happy place 😆
