I got an email from my credit card company yesterday saying they have observed unusual activities on my card yesterday and that the card has been disabled until I call them. I knew I hadn't used the card that day so I gave them a call and sure enough some butthead was trying to charge stuff on my card.

They tried to buy a $269.00 Blackberry, something from Dell for $300.00 both on line. Then they went to a store and tried to buy an Orange Slice for $1.79. My CC company didn't approve any of the charges so no worries there. I don't know how they got it so I had to go through all of my money accounts and change things up just in case.

Fraud protection is a good thing!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem about a month ago and had over 500 dollars taken from me. After I went into my bank and talked to them they said I would have a new card and all the money the next day.

My friends mom just had her card stole out of her mail box about a week ago. The people bought a 1700.00 dollar tv and 300.00 blue ray. They are in jail no tho but yeah some guys will do anything!

No WAY!!! That was YOUR card? I went through the entire checkout procedure to get that Blackberry and then they said my payment couldn't be processed. Same thing with Dell.

Hmmmm, maybe the guy that bought the car on my account, needed a new phone and laptop to go with it.

Wow, glad your credit card company was doing thier job! Was the fraud protection an extra service you had to buy?

No fees for protection, it came with the card.

You forgot to give the cvv# you dummy, get it right next time!

Don't forget the orange slice soda, I guess he was thirsty after all that shopping.

That happened to one of my friends and paypal. A company that charges monthly fee's charged his account 7 times. Each withdraw was $100, pulling the account into $400 of debt. The transaction was complete but the company banned him because of trying to "steal" some cash from the site. I think that they have it wrong, they stole from him and got away with it.

Actually, the type of purchases were not random more than likely (bear in mind I do online security for a living and am intimately familiar with CC theft and the techniques thieves use).

The $269 and over $300 were online purchases to check your credit limit. The Dell purchase was probably attempted first (>$300) to gauge your overall credit limit. The sub-$300 was to check for secured-limit CC's or cards currently at or over limit. $300 is the magic number here since even at limit or secured you can 90% of the time still purchase. Almost every online store verifies CC info for purchase before you enter in any address or shipping information. This makes it easy for thieves to anonymously test your card. Also notice that both attempts were online and electronics that can be quickly and easily resold NIP for cash if the thief does have a mail drop (usually a dummy drop not linked to actual address or name).

The $2 was either to test for micro transactions since even carsd with fraud protection sometimes only kick in on purchases over a set amount...

or the dude just got thirsty :)

So did you lose your actual physical card? Only way I can figure the soda.

Good info bro! I didn't loose the card, it's sitting right next to me. They had to get the info online somehow because I rarely use the physical card, the last time was almost a year ago....I rather pay with cash.

Then yeah, someone cloned your card as alpine said. Relatively easy to do with a existing CC and a magstripe reader/writer.

This happen to me and the mrs. a month or so ago. Someone got here CC number and actually got a membership to a online sex dating site called sex in your city. We caught it, because we check our bank activity regularly and I called the bank and the company of the dating company. They cooperated fully and I had my money back in a couple days. They gave us all the info that the person had put on their profile. I just couldnt believe they bought something like that. I would have figured it just would have been to some porn site or something rather then a hook up site. Damn charge was like $70
