Yesterday after I ran through my pack at my LHS's track with me Slash 4x4 PE I wanted to pick up a lipo. I got a Racers Edge 2s Lipo 5000 mah 40c. My only question is, is it safe to charge at 5 amps? My charger, Passport LiPO, not the ultra, can charge at up to 5 amps. I read the back of the battery and it says no more than 2c. I then read Rolex's post in the Sticky in this section, and calculated that 2c is 10 amps. Is THAT even safe? I wanted to charge at 5 amps, but I would like to double check with all of you guys first.

If it's stamped that you can charge it up to 2C, then yes anything between 5A and 10A would be acceptable to charge it.

Your right on the money. 2c would be 10 amps for a 5000mah pack. 1c(5 amps) should be perfectly fine.

So the only difference in charging at different rates is time. If i charge my pack at 10 amps, instead of 5 it would be done in half the time? And approx. how long should this battery take to charge? Just wondering

Well, at 1c, it should take no more than an hour. But since a lipo is never run completely down, it should never take that long. But a balance charger charges slower, depending on how out of whack the cells are. I'm getting a little out of my element here, but to keep it vague, your battery should charge in 30-45 minutes.:)

thats pretty sweet dude! Thanks, and the only reason it will take the longest t charge it now is because its brand new, so I'm guessing its pretty dead. My LHS is running 6 min qualifiers and 8 min mains. The one guy that works there said he is probably going to make everything 6 minute though. I ran my 7 cell NiMh battery there and it lasted a good 25 minutes on a full charge.

You should be able to run multiple races on one charge.:) That's sweet. I remember crawling at the end of 4 minutes 20 years ago. And I thought that 1200mah dynamite was the end all to that problem.:) Seriously though, I'm not sure of what it would take to charge at 10c. As far as balancing the pack first or while it charges, how warm it should get, ect...

4 minutes, WOW thats like enough time to get up and down my road! haha, and this charger balances and charges at the same time. Its very easy to use, and does a great job for me! Thanks for all your help! My battery just finished charging!

That should be a sweet pack with a 40c discharge rate, gonna have plenty of punch, I remember when the 1700SCR cell came out after the 1200 and 1500 and we all thought they were the SH!T, LOL!!! It is amazing how far battery technology has come over the last 20+ years.

I would say how far the battery technology has come in the past 5 years.

Plus it was only 50% charged when you buy any lipo battery, any lower of a charge and they wont be worth jack. Plus I recommend charging it after every race, you dont want to risk over discharging it. I usually charge the lipo in my Blitz after every 10 to 15 min of use and its a 2C 5200 mAh. Thats what most people around here do as well.

I thought that is what having a lipo cut off was for, so that you don't over discharge them, I have run mine to the lipo cut off in my crawler plenty of times with out ant problems, maybe there is something I don't know, Lipo is still kinda new technology too me, LOL!!!

Thats what my LHS told me, I set the LVC on my VXL ESC and they said run it until that when I'm bashing, but racing on the track like tomorrow, he said to run a race, charge it up, run another, charge and so forth.

you can get away with that when your bashing, and rock crawlers dont use as much battery as much the other electrics, and when your racing your constantly pushing everything to the limit. Its just a good idea to charge it after every race.

And thats what I am gonna do, thanks for the tip though! I appreciate it
