I am more into the bashing and wheelies. My savage xl has stock clutch and spur gears. Is it better to higher on clutch or spur gears for the wheelies? I am assuming I will lose some speed?

Less teeth on the CB= more torque and less top end.
Less teeth on the spur= more top end and less torque.
The length of the Savage XL makes it wheelie less. The K5.9 is a turd of an engine as is the HPI Polished pipe. Make sure you have a proper tune on it, wheelies come from a properly set LSN.
Tires and suspension settings have a bigger effect on wheelies than gearing.
One of the many Savage's I owned had a Mach .26 with a 2 -speed tranny geared 16/47.
The tires I ran on it were Proline Mashers. On grass it was aggravating how easily it would wheelie.
Add some preload to the shocks and go a little thicker on the shock oil. It should wheelie a lot better.

Does the XL have a 3-speed?

I run 15/49 in my savage with an LRP28 in it and a 3-speed. I tried gearing taller, but it causes my slipper to slip, then it glazes within half a tank and it's done until I tear out the spur and rough up the pad again. Kind of stinks because the LRP will pull more gearing... but it's not worth the hassle of messing with the slipper every few tanks.

Anyway, with 1" extended chassis, 15/49 gearing, mine wheelies pretty easy... in 2nd and sometimes when I hit 3rd. What gearing are you running now? Steel or plastic spur? Steel spur is more durable, but the plastic one spools up faster.

:hehe::hehe:Hi guys
If I have a 17T CB, and want better acceleration but not wheelies necessary, what spur do I need. At the moment, I have a 49T plastic and I think a 3 speed gear box (am trying to find out how I can tell)

If all I am doing is general everyday racing on flat and grass, would it be better to switch to a metal spur (because I've heard they are tough and last longer), but what size should I go for?

D

For all intent and purposes in your case I would go to a 16T bell if you want a bit better acceleration because you already have a pretty tall spur. I run a 47T spur. You can lean out your LSN as well if it is too rich you will have crappy accel.
Many guys only run plastic spurs and mesh them well and they work but if your running on very grippy surfaces like a paved road or grass then I would get a steel spur and a 16T hardened CB.

With my F4.1 I ran 47/16 and it went like a banshee. Now i'm running the K5.9 engine and 47/19 gearing with the same performance.
Good luck

Thanks

Thank you for all the comments.

I'm waiting on a metal spur gear 49T and a smaller bell.

Lets see. At the moment, my 49T plastic and 17T bell seem to be working well.

M2C Racing has made a discovery. Our 4 shoe variable wieght flywheel
sytem ( part no. 6027) is a direct fit to the savage 4.6.
I bought a new Savage 4.6 just to test this theory.
Bolted the clutch system on.
The only problem I could find was the stock collet goes a little deeper
into my flywheel than the one supplied with the kit.:D
This system has been very sucessfull on the Racing circuit for buggies and
truggies.
