Hi. I hope you are well. I have a 1/10 scale brushless Losi Tenacity T rig. It has been overheating lately and have heard that I should get a castle creations motor. Any tips on which one I should get? I run 3s.

If you're looking at a budget motor I've heard that you can't beat the Castle Creations Sidewinder 3 motor and ESC combo

Thanks is the sidewinder 3 esc and motor significantly faster?

Faster is relative to gearing/motor/current capability. The mamba X is a tank of an esc that can be run hard.

What motor/esc is in the truck you have? Size, kv rating, esc brand/model?

The motor is a FUZE 550 BL motor 3800kv v2
the ESC is a Fuze 130a SENSORLESS BI WP: 4WD SCT 1/18

Also, I’m not looking to buy the mamba x it’s to expensive. Is It possible to only buy a motor and plug it in to my esc or solder it to my esc?

thanks,
Gavin

If you have room, you can try getting a longer/lower kv motor that has a bit more torque, then gear it up a little. I don't know how much space you have. Hobbystar has a 3665 and 3670 motor. I'm running the 3665 3100kv in my stampede at the moment off a max10 sct which isn't too bad.

I'm not sure what the stock motor in the losi is, but the sidewinder 3 is a 3800kv motor that's reliable. Higher kv means higher top speed, lower kv means lower top speed and more torque/accelaration

The castle 3800kv runs pretty hot on 3S. I ran that in my stampede with the sidewinder sct sv3 esc for a bit. Snapped the motor shaft off, then replaced it with the HW max10 sct/3660sl system and the motor also ran hot which is when I tried the 3665 motor. I may have to go down to a lower kv and gear up to get the speed I want without overheating with 20+ minute run times.

good to know for me too tbh, I had no idea ab that

I had read that the sct sv3 wasn't too great on a heavier vehicle on 3S. It did fine on 2S for over a year with the 3800kv. I'd run pack after pack in it. The motor shaft broke early on after I started running 3S, so I don't know how it really held up. But looking at the cost of replacing the motor (couldn't find just the rotor) vs trying the max10 sct/3660 system, I went with the hobbywing.

Also, the sct sv3 only puts out 5V to the receiver, so I was also running a BEC crammed into the receiver box. The max10 sct didn't need that.

I'll try and run it more this year with the setup I have to see how it does. Most of my time last year was taken up running my outcast and ERBEv2. I had strange issues with the max10sct/3665-3100kv the last run last year. I was either hitting LVC early due to tired packs, or it was overheating. I've built 2 new packs out of spare 2S packs I had with little run time on them, so the 2 7400mah 3S packs I have should be good and strong to rule that out as an issue. I also changed from traxxas plugs to xt90's, so should rule out current delivery as an issue as well.

I'm really jonesing to run something... haven't been out since December and with the weather lately combined with the covid thing... I'm climbing the walls to run RC's at all!

Which hobby wing should I get? Also could I use just a hobby wing motor and use it with my esc?

What do u think about this esc motor combo?

castle esc are great with the castle link.but 1 major issue I've always had with esc and there ubec was they fail at the worst time...every castle esc I have owned and thats many the bec failed.even several castle becs the 10 and the 20 amps.. when running youll notice a slight lack in turning radius thats the bec failing...not a HW or HK fan but I know a lot of Rcers use them for the chaep way.. Hay I still use today some Quarks best ESC in the world but sadly they are no more..loved the Car series like Monster 120 my fav. and Quark MK series..enjoy and play hard its better that way.. charges 6 lipos going to beat on the Erevo V1 with Kershaw motor on 4 cells.

I don't think you want to go higher kv, that will likely just run hotter. You want the same speed or faster without overheating.

Odds are, your motor is a 3660 sized can, if you can fit a longer one, I'd look at the hobbystar 3665 or 3670.
The max10 sct is a 120A esc. The max10 is a 60A. If the fuze is really a 130A, then going with a max10 sct esc won't be of any benefit.

If the fuze is a 130a esc, getting a longer/lower kv motor would give you more torque and you could gear it up to get the speed you want while keeping temps lower. Going higher KV is going to likely pull more amps, then overheat the esc.

Cool thanks how many KVs should I get on my motor? 1800? And which pinion gear number?

if you get 1800 your top speed will be way to low especially if you're racing, I'd go with a 3400-3800kv motor
