I'm putting together a PC for my freind. This is the first scratch built PC i've done but I've been reading alot about it and I've taken mine apart several times so I know the major parts I need but I have a few questions. These are the parts i'm getting for him:

Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe

Video card: RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB DDR

CPU: INTEL 478 P4 3.2GHz (512K Cache, 800FSB)

Hard drive: WESTERN 80GB IDE 7200RPM HARD DRIVE

Sound Card: SOUND SB AUDIGY 2

Memory: PC-3200 512M DDR

The DVD-RW and CD-RW will be Sony black face but I need to know if i'm missing anything. What cables will I need, cooling fans, stuff like that???I also need to what Tower to get and if i'll need to get a power supply with it or not?I'm thinking like a 400w power supply and I need a case with good cooling.

If you buy and oem processor they don't usually come with a heatsink and fan. Just buy any generic p-4 heatsink/fan and you will be fine.
If you buy a retail processor they come with a warranty, and the oem heatsink and fan.

Make sure the ram is compatible with the motherboard.
Make sure the CPU is compatible with the mobo.
All the cables for the drives will come with the drives ;)

All the power/switch cables should come with the power supply/case.

Any tower will work as long as it's p4 compatible (it should say on the case)

I can buy generic cases local with power supply for $40 that would be the way to go.

Just make sure it has one fan in it, besides the powersupply fan. If you are going to be in and out of the case a lot, check for things like sharp edges, ease of use.

Does he need a network card, floppy, or firewire?

a 400watt PSU is good.just make sure not to buy a BS Brand

you can get a Floppy for 5 bucks.

you might want to go with rounded IDE cable instead of the usual IDE cables.they would be better for airflow

Antec Cases are pretty nice and so are Chieftec.

The floppy drive isn't a problem I can pick that up locally and I was thinking about doing round cables but wasn't sure exactly which ones to get.I've seen several different brands and they all look the same except for the colors.I'd like to find a case with USBs in the front but I can't seem to find a good one.

How much time does this guy spend on his computer, and what is he planning on using it for?

I just can't see paying near $100 for batter case+power supply if the guy isn't overclocking or gaming the heck out of it. just my :2cents:

I've always been more for getting a decent case p/s for around $50 and sticking that extra $50 into ram, HD or processor
