just put in new piston and sleeve in my 5.9.i put needles to factory specs but when i fired it up it got real hot real quick.i checked settings again, all fine,so i took it apart again.piston and conrod round rite way, sleeve in rite spot...now its back together and I'm about to put back in truck.I'm too scared to fire it up.anyone got any ideas?

check your fuel lines first to make sure you dunt have an air leak somewhere because that is what is making it get hot fast.

thanx,i checked lines, there no leaks...the truck is together but still to scared to start it...

I'm using sik hobbies 20% with 13%oil.I've checked fuel lines but I'm leaking air from somewhere.how do i know where?i tightned carby and heatsink hell tight...

it gets too around 200 in first minute then i shut it off.i richin it up and i wont start, and gets hot doing that.theres smoke but no oil commin out pipe.when i took backing plate of f to see if conrod round rite way, there was plenty oil in motor.there is oil round the grommet in the manifold, but none commin out pipe.

Are you richening the LSN or the HSN? You should be richening the LSN to bring the temps down at idle to 1/4 throttle.
200F-240F is perfect for break-in.

this is my problem...my truck runs great but alittle hot, round 240-250.ran it in on 25% nitro.around 20 tanks it started to develop this problem...the starter would not grip,it would just spin freely.then it would grip, then it wouldnt.got to the point where it wouldnt start at all coz it seemed like there no compression.....so i thort the gears in the backin plate were worn out.so i replaced them.when i did that i noticed there woz nothin wrong with them.i still got same prob, wont start.so i got on this site and came to the conclution that piston an sleeve worn out.so i got a new one.i put it in and while i did notice an improvement in compression the stater stil freakin does the exact thing...itgrips then doesn't an so on!!I've spent 200 dollars on it,my mates thing I'm a dikhead coz i can't fix my truck...its now sittin here laughin at me...someone please HEEEELLLP!!!!!!!

It's more than likely your one way bearing on the starter shaft. Clean the bearing. I'm not sure if your engine has the OWB inside the engine or outside.

Your old piston/sleeve set is probably fine. See how far you can easily push the old piston into the old sleeve. If you can't push it easily 1/4" from the top, then it's more than likely still good.

ok,I'm gonna try the owb.the starter shaft?do u mean on the engine or the starter?

You have broken the OWB for sure. There is probably nothing wrong with the other piston and sleeve.
When you break in a new or rebuilt engine, you HAVE to preheat the engine with a heat gun or hair dryer and loosen the GP a little. Tighten it up as soon as you get a decent idle going.
Once the piston and sleeve break in, the preheating process will no longer be needed.
For the first 1/2 gallon of fuel you should preheat the engine to prevent breaking the OWB.

ok,slow down tiger.wot a gp? and where i find the owb? on the engine?

so i should only be able to turn flywheel one way?coz mine u can turn both ways...

I believe the XL's OWB is on the inside of the crank case but I would check the manual before taking my word but it is definately the owb.....

ok,I'm gonna try the owb.the starter shaft?do u mean on the engine or the starter?

The OWB (one way bearing 15294) and shaft that spins it (15234).

You may have put it together wrong? I think the OWB on that engine has a pin that goes in it that may have a spring that pushes it out and holds it against or inside the tip of the crankshaft.

You can see how they kind of show you the pin goes into the end of the crankshaft. I'm not 100% certain about the spring being behind it though. That may be some of HPI's older engines that had that.

wow! thanx for that.that made it easy to understand, and find.so u saying i just have to clean it?I'm gonna have a look...

I'd try cleaning it first. Soak it in some DA (denatured alcohol, doesn't have water like isopropal). I take a piece of paper towel and wet it really good with DA, then roll it so you can poke it through the bearing. Then spin the bearing on the dampened towel. Spin in both directions. This lets the grime/goo work itself out onto the towel.

Also, clean the shaft really well with DA.

Then a drop of oil and give it a shot.

How long was it out of commission when you replaced the piston/sleeve? This could be all it is if it sat for very long. The fuel gets gummy and makes a mess out of OWB's.

I've got the owb out,it was a bit oily but works and looks ok.wot i do now?the shaft looks ok aswell.

it was hasnt chased any roos for about 3 weeks.il do wot u say then try it.

ok,the owb has been cleaned and put back together.my cuda xl is ready to fire up in the mornin.it better start or I'm gonna burn it...thanx for all ur help,il let u know if it runs.

was ready to fire up xl but none off my batterys were...every thing on charge so 2moz the day.there plenty off compression but!!
