There are 4 billion ways to break in an engine....and they are all right. The basic idea is get some heat into it....let things expand....let it run for a little while....then let it cool. Whether you drive it...idle it on a starter box/workbench or what have you. You just need to give it time to wear in the piston to the sleeve before you go and try to have it turn 25K+ RPMS as you rip down the street/track.
I let mine idle on the box for 4-5 tanks, doing 2-3 heat cycles per tank of fuel. After tank 2 I started to add a little throttle up to @ 25%, next cycle I went to 50% throttle,...then 75...and finally full throttle blips. After tank 5...I tossed it on the ground and drove it for a few more tanks easily to get close to a base tune on it. A few more tanks...I race tuned it and went for it....
If you use the idle method, you will have to lean the low speed needle to get your temps up, but don't go nuts with it. Get it to @ 220-ish after a few tanks and don;t go much higher for break in. You just want things to expand and loosen up a bit. If you do lean the LSN, make sure you richen it up before you drop it on the ground and start driving it though.
Break in is an art form...and a pain in the rear all at the same time!
