Hi I have a nitro truck that i would like to get expert help on tuning. You may have not heard of this brand, but its called a Sportwerks Reaction, it's a .18 engine 2wd and 20% fuel and electric start. what i need help on is i can't seem to tune my car the way its supposed to run. its running temp is 400 degrees.

Here's how it all started....

I got the truck off of ebay, next bought some fuel, glowplug, and battery for the car. cranked it up on a stand, cranked up fine but the idle was set way to fast so i adjusted it (NOTE I NEVER ADJUSTED THE HIGH SPEED NEEDLE). Next i took it off the jack and took it to a parking lot and got the feel of my first car. i ran the whole bottle of Blue Thunder 20% fuel which is wat is recommended for it and went out to my local hobby store and bought a brand i have never heard of. the brand was called Brister's Brew 20%. Its some hobby store on dallas Tx that makes there own fuel. So i poured the new gas into the car cranked it noticong that it took alittle bit longer to crank up i put my battery on the charger, because sometimes when the battery is low the starter and glow plug dont work so good. 30 minuates later cranked it up started on the first 5 seconds of starting it ran it for alittle bit and about half tank WITHOUT ADJUSTING THE HIGH SPEED NEDDLE it stalled and died. i took it to the temp gage and saw that the temp was around 400 degrees. i thought that i blew up my engine because it was smokin hot to the touch even the frmae was hot to the touch. so i let it cool down for a LONG time cranked it up, it was fine no problem then while driving at 1/2 throttle it just died. I didnt gunt it or do anything to make it do that. I mena i drive pretty hard but that should not be happening.. So now i'm really mad at the car and start messing with the high speed neddle.. [the carb does not have low speed neddle only high speed and idle]. I thought TO LEAN so i richened it and ran it again still same ending, but the temp was around 350 so i richened it alot! hoping this time would be the time i filled up the tank full started it and now its taking forever to start the thing. finnally it started and it did it agin and now the temp was back at 400!!!! whats wrong with this car?

Now i have seen on this site that an engine can overheat from leaning it out to much and even to rich. what does that mean? it seems like either way i do anything on adjustments nothing seems to be working.

Now here is all my questions that i would liek answered.
1. is it to lean or is it to rich?
2. how is my new fuel making my car's performance SUCK?
3. should i buy a new angine and carb so i can put pull start?
4. what am i doing wrong?

I'm seriously concidering tkaing this thing to a pro and let them worry about it but i want to gain my own experience.
Anything yall can do to help i'm sure will help i just need some basic tuning guides since i'm a beginner..
Thanks, Nathan

well i meant that it was My brand new car but was a used truggy

Ok i checked my glow plug and the coil wire is VERY white and the little piece that attaches to the bottom of the plug is kind of black. So i'm running to lean. now when i richen the carb out it still stalls. When i crank it up the first time for the day it runs very strong with a slight sluggish take of and like 30 seconds later it wants to doe after i gunt the throttle. So i'm now trying to slowy get the car up to speed and when i do that about a minuate later it just dies even when i dont give it gas. I'm still wondering if its my gas because i had no problems with this car, no tuning no nothing thill i got this gas!! Bad thing is i got a gallon of it and now i have to use alll of it because i dont want to waste my money. But i'm seriously concidering buying a new engine and carb probibly from HPI Racing becasue i trust them. and buying a gallon of Blue thunder gas., but then i dont want to spend all that money. so i'm gonna try all i can and i will give updates and what happen after a run.

Did the nitro fuel come with it? Or did you buy it new? One thing you need to do, is preheat the engine, grab a hair dryer or a heat gun. If it doesn't run at about 200F or above, it won't run right. You also can't get a tune until you get that temp up.

Nitro requires alot of patience when you are new to it. Don't give up, because once you figure it out, the feeling is great. You'll slap yourself after you realize how easy it gets.

When i first bought the car it didnt have any fuel so i went out to a store called hobby town usa and bought the recommended fuel Blue thunder 20% and when i ran out of that fuel i went to a closer store and bought this brand that has had nothing but problems to my car.

Ok, ever change brands unless you absolutely have to. Each brand is mixed differently, and can de-tune you in a hurry. What kind of fuel do you have now?

He stated in his first post that it's a home brew from another hobby shop.
If their fuel is in a barrel without a bladder, a LOT of the volatile chemicals have evaporated with every pour. Always stick with a factory brand bottled fuel.

It's your LOW speed needle that needs to be slowly richened to bring down the temps.

Stick with a good fuel don't run moonshine in it.It will save you alot of problems dump the crap you bought go back to what you were using.:D Oh that truggy would be brandused!

OK just read my manual again and found out that that I can't use airplane fuel and this fuel that i bought is for airplanes boats and cars.. SO last night i bought some of the recommended fuel Blue Thunder 20% sport and that should solve my problem.... See it ran perfect till i bought this homemade crap! so now i have to re tune it with the corrct fuel.. It would be a help if everyone could teach how to perfect my tuning skills since i'm a begginer at tuning nitro engines.

The only true way to perfect your tuning skills....is to tune ;-) Listen to the engine, watch the smoke trail, feel the power curve it's making...and finally keep an eye on your temps. Those are your 4 best tuning aids, and while it may seem hopeless at first, I assure you it does get easier! Just pay attention and let the engine tell you what it needs....

Alright i will do the best i can with it.. Especially since i'm getting the coorect gas it shouldnt be as hard as the gas that i have now lol. Ok i will update when i ge the gas and tell yall whats going on.

not being mean but call it fuel, not gas... since there are bigger rc cars that run on gas :)..

From reading your post, it does sound like that changing your fuel back to some good stuff (Blue Thunder) will fix your tuning issue. Also, somewhere on this site is information about sealing your engine. You may have an air leak causing the lean condition, which you can't tune out of your engine

I will check and see if there's a seal leak. And sorry about calling it gas, I hope the new fuel that is recommended will solve my problem, because it ran great with that brand of fuel before i bought this home ade crap lol

Ok i just got the fuel ran it last night. Now it did take a good while to get it started, probibl because of switching fuels, but finally got it started and checked temp and it was around 180 so i leaned it out and now the temp range is between 230-240 so i'm happy, but thing is i was on an rc stand i didnt completly run it so today i will run it on the track and hopefully it should work.

Ok i ran it once and pulled throttle and it shut off!1 i'm begining to think that i burned up my engine with the bad fuel :(

Wel no luck, i have decided to buy a new engine! Now i have a question can i put a .21 engine on my truck, right now it has a .18 engine couold i put a .21 on there?
