Depending on what savage you have, I've been having really good luck with the XL brakes. Dual fiber disk. Requires a new hex/hub though as well. Can usually find them on ebay for pretty cheap.

I have a set of these still in the pack.
I did the following, and I have to be careful if I run on pavement not to brake too hard, or I flip the truck over (keep in mind, I have all the stock servos with 1600 mah receiver pack)
1) Make sure the screws that hold the pads in place were tight
2) Cleaned the pads with Nitro cleaner & then scuffed the best I could with a light sandpaper while on the truck - sprayed with nitrocleaner again
3) Installed an exhaust diverter so there was no chance of oil blowback on the brakes
4) Installed an RPM skid center skid plate - this helped keep the disks a bit cleaner (just a bit)
I know a lot of people do the fuel line trick instead of the spring, but like I said, with the stock set up & the items listes above, I can roll the truck back over front if I get on the brakes too hard.
I will use them though, since I have them once the stock ones need replacing though
