Hey all,

I'm pretty experienced in modifying jeeps for offroad use, but I'm not sure how these little guys will behave or how universal they are with different parts.

I'm looking at replacing the engine in my Jato with something big, probably a .28 of sorts, I dont need suggestions on engines, I just need to know what or if I will need to replace anything in the tranny. I know I will want to go with a lower gear ratio to compensate for more torque, as the 3.3 already makes it pop wheelies when tuned right. Is there a kit made wit metal gears and a lower more powerful gear ratio for the Jato? I'm assuming I will also need to beef up the difs and the drive shafts as well... Any of you out there that have done a big block mod in a Jato?

Are you sure you don't need a walk through?
 
I don't think you'll need to upgrade the trans, but getting a bb mounted might not be easy.

What is the best BB for a Jato
I would recommend an On-road motor even if you do Off-roading. Reason because most On-road engine have similar torque to a TRX 3.3 and will not tear up your transmission. I would stay in the .21 size also because of the weight factor. A larger cu. engine will most likely will add more weight which is not good for a Jato which is design to be light. Off-road engine is torque heavy and can have your Jato on its back in no time. If you want to go nuts with your Jato by all means go for an Off-road engine. I would atleast recommend gearing down and investing into Hardened steel gears. Which I know your plastic gears will not last in an Off-road engine.

Clutch system
With the New era racing conversion kit it will allow you to use your stock flywheel, clutch shoes, and clutch bell. I would atleast use Revo gearing because of the 1.0 pitch it have for a deeper bite in the mesh. Also Axial clutch bell works and, the savage clutch system works this includes flywheel to clutch bell. Note if you do decide to use the savage clutch system you will have to shave the inside of the clutch guard, best to do it with some type of rotary tool. If your engine needs to be bump started use the Traxxas 40mm flywheel. This is the same flywheel I using currently with my engine and it works great.
 
get a O.S. 21tm its a bolt in, with tons of power. just learn to tune will get you more than you think.
 
I think you'd be much happier with a .21, a .28 would put out way too much torque and you wouldn't be able to use it all in a Jato.
 
I would also recommend a high RPM .21. It will be faster than the BB's. The only thing you're gonna get by putting a BB in it is more torque, not more speed.
 
yep my 21 seams to break lots of parts. but DONT tighten the slipper to much, start lite. on pavement DONT hit bumps, cracks under power. you will be repairing the trans.
 
A .28 geared right will walk a .21 in the jato the 28's got more torque. More torque means taller gearing which equals faster speed.

To the op you will need really tall gearing to get any kind of control out of the .28 in the jato

you don't get top speed from torque.you get top speed from h.p.and rpm's.if you want fast go with high reving small block with lower gearing ratio.

+1 for what exteme said. HP=speed Torque= pulling power:D
But I still say go big or don't go at all:D You could locate an RB engine and mount prob be hard to come by though. I know they used to make a conversion for the Jato.
 
Torque gets you off the line, HP carries you across the finish line. If you can't get into the powerband then you will not create useable rpm.
 
The point is correct but mute. A modified .28 would destroy the jato before it got off the line lol. Look into the picco .21 P9R Evo3 onroad engine, it would be about the best BB choice for that platform.
 
It's stupid to think a .28 would ever be better than a .21 in a jato. A good .21 can rev 10,000 more rpm than the average .28. Torque wouldn't be an issue at all. Have you ever seen a 3.3 powered jato? A BB .21 should have plenty more torque than that.
