Yes! ^^^^ This! That's how the old school 2-speeds work.

Hey Fog, I have no idea how that whole 3rd channel gear selector would even work, TBH. My stuff is old and I haven't really gotten caught up on the newer tech - especially, the crawlers.
Well, there are a lot of things a good radio can do these days. I have a model setup on my MT12 that is for motor on axle crawlers. You can use two knobs on the radio to change the speed of each motor, allowing you to dial in any amount of overdrive, or center them for standard drive. A 3 position switch can be setup for 4 wheel steering to easily change from normal steer, crab steer, or rear steer. But on that same model I have setup, you can dial in all kinds of variants to that, like one axle can be set to only rotate 20% max if you please, or anywhere in between, just by adjuting a pot.

I forgot about the nitros with reverse. Yeah, that switch would be ideal for that.

This chit is just way to cool not to want to play with it.

So, I've been poking around the site and haven't really found anything similar to my thread title. I haven't done a ton of research [yet] on which modern TX/RX/Servos are 'the good stuff, yet affordable,' so I figured I'd poll the group.

I think I mentioned earlier in the thread that I'd picked up a FlySky 5GT with some extra FS-BS6 receivers, and as much as I love the radio with its features (primarily, Anti-Runaway control), I was a bit disappointed when I learned I couldn't plug it into my PC and use it as a game controller - Steam has ReVolt, and it's a blast... but not with a keyboard. I also have a buddy who wants to 'race' with me, but he has no cars or gear, so I'm thinking of getting another TX/RX setup so I can get some of my other junk back on the road with modern electrics.

So, now I need TX/RX gear for 2 drivers with the following:
  • Kyosho SuperTen GP
  • Kyosho FW-05T Pure-Ten
  • HPI Super Nitro RS4
  • HPI Nitro RS4 "Racer"
  • HPI Nitro RS4 Base
  • Traxxas Nitro Hawk
  • Mugen Sekei MBX8R
I'm leaning toward the FlySky G7P with its FS-R7P receivers and I'm coming up short on a few data points. Does anybody know the following:
  • Are both TX units compatible with the RX units? (i.e., can I pair the G7P with either the BS6 or R7P, and vice versa?)
  • Can both TX units be paired with ALL of the cars, so if we swap cars, we don't have to swap radios? (I know I would have to pair each car with each radio and save configs to do this, but is it doable?)
  • Will both TX units know how to stay out of each other's way when both are in use?
  • Does the R7P have Anti-Runaway control? (VERY important to me, since I've had issues in the past with my SuperTen using old 27MHz AM radio gear)
I guess the question of each TX staying out of each other's way would be more applicable if I had 2 of the same radios (i.e., 2 5GTs, for example - which I might just pick up another one anyway since they're on clearance at A-Main for $40).

I'm still sniffin' around for a NIB Kyosho FW-06, but I picked up an FW-05 off eBay and am getting it back together, since it's basically my beloved SuperTen GP's "mini-me" and the FW-06's 'Daddy.' I can definitely see this becoming my Go-To on-road ride. If Kyosho has truly discontinued the FW-06, I might just get another FW-05 and be happy about it. I don't know if I'll ever get a Crawler (since they're all basically electric), but I'm not ruling it out, and at least know these radios should be able to work for a crawler (with the right receiver).

OK - I think I just got an answer to the question of cross-utilization between TX & RX units, which is a big 'No.'

Apparently, the G7P & R7P use the newer ANT protocol, and the 5GT & BS6 use the older AFHDS 2A protocol, so there's THAT. I guess I'll just need to pick-up that 2nd 5GT (with 2 BS6 RXs) for the older junk.

I don't know of any radio system that doesn"t have a failsafe that kills the ESC in case of signal loss. You just have to make sure and set your failsafe up.

Or you could grab the Radiomaster MT12 and control any FS Rx, along with Spektrum, Traxxas, snd just about any other Rx out there, all from one radio. You just have to get the version with the built-in 4in1 module.

Thanks, Brother! I'll definitely keep that in mind for next time. I just ordered another 5GT + 2 BS6 receivers, along with a G7P + 3 R7P receivers. I really do like the FlySky stuff - at least so far. I figure this way, I'll at least be able to put any of my on-road cars down for a run with potentially 3 drivers, and both off-roaders without having to change RXs. That's a good enough start for me, as I'm sure to have a couple of buddies interested in doing so soon enough. One, I know for sure will wind up with an off-road nitro ride of his own and will wind up building a track on his property (7 acres) once he goes all-in on his own.

The price on the Radiomaster MT12 looks good as well - might just save that one for tax refund gift season.

The MT12 has a fairly steep learning curve. But you can always use ChatGPT (as much as I hate this AI crap). You simply tell AI what you want to do and it will work out the logic for you. It will even write LUA scripts for you and tell you how to get them in the radio. So the learning curve is not an issue really. And the more you tinker with it with the help of AI the more you'll learn how to use it.

Just a sample. The more specific you are with your question, the better the response.
