I'm looking to get my XL-5 to brushless. I have one rustler that has the traxxas vxl combo in it. I love it and very satisfied with the system. I just however don't have the money right now. I was looking for something new, like the talcon. How does this system compare to the vxl-3.

Oh it's going to be for the rustler xl-5. And I'm only going the be running on a 2s 5000mah turnigy lipo hard case pack.

Also I talked to my Lhs and they said they would only take $10 off for 2 xl-5 esc and a 550 Titan motor. :(

Vxl is a nice setup no doubt. If you can get it from your lhs so they can take care of returns if it has problems.

But on the cheap the hobbywing setups run great from hobbyking.com

The best inexpensive brushless combo I have found and been using is a Castle made Duratrax 1/10 Element 3900kV Brushless System

I have this installed in both my Team B4 Buggies and thinking about putting it into my Team T4Truck. It is narrow enough to fit in these and must say on the local LHS track I cannot hit full throttle. 1/2 throttle with the current gearing is all I can perform. They are crazy fast and made by Castle. I keep telling myself I need to put smaller pinion gears on the them but never do. while they do not have the cooler fan they do not get real hot with the fins. The motor even after 30 minutes is still below 120 degrees.

I run Venom 2S 5000 40C Lipo packs and get about 30 to 40 minutes of runtime.

I think you can get the Castle sidewinder/3800kv combos on ebay for around 110-120 bucks? I can't remember for sure but I think they are around there.

Dynamite FUZE systems are good I have 2 FUZE systems in my RIG"s prices are alittle bit more 129 - 180 bucks & thay come with program card that are easy to setup ESC..

I rune the Fuze on my SCX-10. Plenty of torque and speed on 2s.

Ok have any of you ever ran the tacon brushless green motor. I read the reviews and they seemed pretty good. What esc should I use on thing motor

I ran their 3500kv for a while....To me it looked like a Velineon 3500kv inside and out. Probably rebadged I'm guessing. They are decent motor for 2 pole motors but I've gotten to the point where I only like using 4 pole motors for my off road kits anyway.

What's the difference between 2 pole and 4 pole. Is the higher the better.and also is the speed and power comparable to the venilon motor

I've never really used a velineon so i can't answer that....Come to think of it though its not rebadged its just similar....I remember seeing my friends velineon when he took the front bell off and thinking to myself it looked just like my tacon 3500kv. After thinking about it though they can't be rebadged because the velineon has posts on the back for soldering wires to it, if I remember correctly, the Tacon has non-cutable wires that come straight out of the motor. All I can say for sure is its a decent motor for the money.

4 pole motors have more torque than 2 Pole motors so they can push taller gearing or the same gearing yet run cooler.

I have a Traxxas Velineon system in my Slash 4x4 and it works well I enjoy the fact that is has LiPo voltage cutoff point when the battery voltage gets to about 3.5 volts per cell. Which is important when running LiPo packs because you do not want the voltage to drop below 3.25 volts per cell on a 2S LiPo battery pack.

On my Duratrax it will cut out about 3.45 volts and stop working. How do I know this I have a LiPo pack battery balance pack and test my batteries than balance them before recharging. I recharge my LiPo packs at the end of the day again. These battery packs are not like NiMH or NiCads and keep there charge between running them and it is suggested that you recharge them when you are done playing. NiCads you want to drain and NiMH you charge them then recharge them again before playing. NiMH cells require occasional cycling to make sure they take a full charge.

We can go deep into LiPo Battery packs they also have a C rating. this website goes into more information then you would ever want to know about LiPo Battery packs but is very informative on the care of these packs.

I charge my battery packs at half the MaH rate if I have a LiPo 5000 pack it is charged at a rate of 2.5 on my charger. A 3000 Pack is at 1.5 on my charger. This makes sure you do not over heat the pack while charging it. Holds true with NiMH and NiCd packs also.

You could also watch my Electric RCs for beginner vids that are posted HERE in this forum. You can skip to the lipo section first if you want :)

For my money though Id rather buy a castle 3800kv/sidewinder combo over the velineon kit. It may cost a bit more but its slightly higher KV, the ESC handles a little more amps, and its a 4 pole motor unlike the velineon. That being said though most velineon owners are happy with those systems.

I have really considered the castle 3800kv/sidewinder combo for my next purchase it is a little more than I have been paying for the 2 Duratrax 1/10 Element 3900kV Brushless System I have already purchased and they are made by the same company Duratrax brands it. But pretty close the same system

Dude, for power, reliability, WATERPROOF!, just get a velineon system. The Castle. products right now are not waterproof. The new stuff made after Jan 1., will be. But AMainhobbies has the system on sale
all the time for $139 which is a killer deal. I dont think youd be disappointed. That rustler will do 70mph with velineon. Good luck with whichever you choose.
