Just getting back into racing (17.5 buggy) and almost everyone is running larger pins in the rear on our carpet track.

In the past they were considered astro tires.

When I showed up with Fuzz Bite rear people were recommending changing to something like JC Nessi.

Reasons ranged from too much traction to not enough traction with the FuzzBite.

FuzzBite feel great IMHO.

What's the deal?

Huh. Me personally and seeing all the local racers at my local tracks. Most if not all run a small low pro pin tire like Fuzz Bites. Or other common setups being cactus/fuzz bite or fuzz bite/swagger and theres a lot of possible tire combinations that work. This is on black crc, eos, and office carpet. Me personally on my 2wd (22 5.0) I run ProMotion Vipers F/R. Used to run Cactus/fuzz bites and those worked pretty well too. On my 4wd (B74.1) I run Fuzz Bites F/R. Also tried out pin swags F/R which worked pretty well but wear was too fast and not long lasting. Also ran cactus/swaggers and ran those tires to death over several practice days lol.

Never tried large knobby pins on carpet so can't speak for that.

I have seen that pins are the go to for carpet.
That said, how did your car do?
You might want to experiment on ypur own if you are having trouble. If you are winning, you should be telling THEM what tires to run. Know what I'm saying? 😉
No set up is generic and will work on every car and every track.
You are allowed to do you, so long as there are no rules at the track telling otherwise. 👍

Yea. One of my past race days on my 4wd my fuzz bites were too grippy. And the other weekend when I went for practice they were too slide-y and not enough grip. Weird. (this is black crc carpet btw) I heard some people gluing sidewalls or trimming pins but never tried that myself.

Myself personally I'm not a tuner so I just buy or setup something and leave it as is lol.

Trimming pins is how we ended up with all the weird patterns we have today. Easier to buy a tire than to sit and trim one up!
You will get better as a tuner and you will get better lap times. 😉

Haha thanks.

I've only done one race so far I didn't do very well but it was not the fault of my buggy.

I've let a few people drive it and they all say the same thing it's planted and easy to drive and don't change anything.

But people who pass buy and see my tires knowing I'm new try to help even offering up their own tires for me to try.

They all run Associated though and this is a Mugen w/ their team driver setup on it which was FuzzBite rear Pin Swag front.

If the winning racers all run a certain set up, you may want to consider trying some similar set up.
However, if the car feels good and you are not outdriving it, I see no need to change right away.
You will need tires eventually. Its not unusual to have a few different types and sets.
Big racers might even rotate in a new set of tires EVERY race. Then they use for heats, then as practice tires...
Tires are an expensive part of racing for sure!

Yeah that was my experience when I tried novice/21.5 a few yeaes ago.

Now they are all running larger pins which baffles me because it's carpet and those used to be considered astro tires.

I also visited the other local carpet track and the owner who is a Schumacher guy said he runs Mezzos whereas before he recommended mini pins.

I did pick up some Mezzos to try since I like Schumacher as well but right now I'm mostly just needing practice time and most any tire will do.

Right yeah for me personally I'm not worried about my setup I'm going to try pins for the heck of it but I mostly need to work on my driving.

This was mostly just out of curiosity because seeing everyone on almost full size pins on carpet was not something I expected.
