Very interested in the arrma 3s lineup. One of the features on the Spektrum transmitters is the throttle limit. There’s is a switch that allows the user to select from 100/75/50 percent throttle.

Anyone know if you would have to use a spektrum smart battery or is it just the communications with the rx??

It works without a smart LiPo, just switch it to your desired limit and it will be limited to that speed.

I saw a speed test video on YouTube where the guy ran a 2s and a 3s in his stock vorteks. 35/51mph respectively.

Full blast would be overkill where we will use it in the yard.

Safe to assume less throttle would also add up to longer run times ?? Ultimately would like to be able to squeeze an hour or more out of 2 packs if possible

99.99% positive you don't need the Spectrum batts to use that feature. The throttle limit is present on pretty much all radios, many of them have an adjustable throttle dual rate knob, allowing you to set it anywhere from 0% to 100% throttle.

Yes, running at a lower speed will yeild longer run times and lower temps. I know from personal experience, I run my 1/14 scale buggy at <%50 average, makes the driving more laidback, plus lower temps, longer run times, way less breakages (plus I'm a more cautious driver), and less drivetrain stress. I use 1500mAh batteries in my buggy, since that makes it well balanced, and since it's light and efficient, and I don't run for super long, I don't need big capacity packs. I'm not sure about the runtime for you, it depends on the terrain, battery capacity, driving style, and driving speed.
 
I have zero smart batteries in my inventory and we run our Granite usually at 75% throttle. 100% is Ludicrous speed.

90% of this vid is on 75%. Oh, and that is me on guitar 😜

I can see how even at 75% that granite is a rocket!!
And on 3s at 100% throttle with optimal traction, it can almost do a standing backflip! I bet that without the wheelie bar it could do one.

It is hard on the rear axles to run it at 100%. I don't have a clue why, but I will be ordering the CVD's for it soon. I get tired of working on it every time we bash it.

I found that if you tighten the slipper to full tight then loosen 1 1/2 turns, it can help with the strain on the driveshafts, it worked for my cousin's Granite 3s. He's now running at 100% on 3s and doing flips and wheelies with no issues! The previously popped driveshaft from the too tight slipper clutch was popped back in and it's still working!

The slipper is adjusted properly.
 
I haven't adjusted the punch because I like it right where it is. I did think about that, but decided it just needs beefier rear axles. It's always the rear ones letting go. I have never had a front one come loose.
 
Got the chance to experiment with the throttle adjustment on a new build yesterday. Dialed down to 10% so we could try it out in the house. That was after I inadvertently goosed the throttle (at 100%) and the little bugger drove up the back back door and did a killer twist flip, and stuck the landing!!

cool feature. hopefully the weather will cooperate next weekend and we can take it to the indoor track. now that I know how, planning to start it out 50-60% so my son and I can get a feel for the car and the track.
