My poor old nitro rustler's engine locked up after two years of sitting in the garage, being neglected. Anyhow, rather than try to free up the old engine and get it running, I've decided to swap a traxxas 2.5 into it. The 2.5 is only a little more expensive than a new replacement for the stock engine, and the conversion kit is only $25. So, is anyone out there running this combination? What do you think of the performance gain? Does the larger engine have any ill effects on handling? Thanks, everyone.

They might be, I don't know. I've been out of the RC world for a couple years. This is an older Rustler, maybe four years old or so. I think it has a .15 engine, I can't remember.

You could also drop in a o.s .18 :devious: you might have to add some weight to the front wheels to keep in from doing back flips though lol :jk:.

thats what i want.. i moved the hump pack up just in front of the fuel tank..between the two chassis pieces.. so it will be driveable..

Hmm thats a good idea, I want to get a o.s for my Rc10 gt I dont know if the make one that bolts right in but that would be sweet, or I could go extreme and put in a .21 in it lol. Then I would have to upgrade the entire drive line though lol

2 of mine are n rustler 2.5s and yes they are quite powerful. mine does wheelies quite easily and my motor is wearing down quite alot. my other 1 is a trx pro.15 and it is not nearly as powerful.

i've heard the 2.5 has 60% more horspower

I've always liked the TRX Pro 15's for some odd reason.

Granted they arnt the most powerful engines but it does have a nice smooth powerband & always runs very consistantly (always holds a tune, no flame outs, no overheating, etc).

Very under rated engine in my opinion.

it is good for bashing where you will really beat it up but racing the 2.5 will just horsepower past it, like i said i have both and the trx ro .15 is lacking power for racing.
the trx pro .15 will keep up on acceleration until a certain point then the 2.5 just takes off from the pro .15

Update: I got the engine in last thursday (7-14), and broke it in. Man, that new engine is a BEAST! After the initial break-in and tuning the carb, I made a few full throttle runs and promptly broke an axle. Went to the hobby store and bought a couple replacement axles, and replaced broken axle. First run after fixing axle, it snapped the other axle. Replaced the other axle and made a few more runs around the yard, and something gave out. I think its the clutch. When I hit the throttle it jerks and tries to move, then the engine just revs freely. I left for vacation the next day, and just got back this morning (7-24), so I haven't had a chance to examine the problem.

Well, if the gears are spinning, then its something in the driveline... If none of the gears are spinning when the engine is revving, it could be the clutch, loose flywheel... A number of things.. Let us know how it turns out!

ha I've been havin problems like that with the drivetrain. I slapped the Ofna/Picco .21 max in my rusty. I tear alot of stuff up....

I think my friend is gonna one-up ya.. he is putting a sirio .23 in his rusty... :arrr:

i tried to oval race in the truck class at my local track with a traxxas nitro sport that had a pro.15 in it , which to say it didn't have enough power. i put a new traxxas 2.5 in it and it was a bad boy for about 1 race , then the parts started flying out of it. the plastic outdrive cups couldn't handle the motor on the high bite track, everytime i came out of the corner and it hooked up. it would pop one axle out. mip cvd's cured that and some new tranny gears. i like the traxxas 2.5 , plenty of power. :) i also went with a xxxnt drake. :)

o man, i'd like to get the picco .26 once this .21 goes......... gnome#10 u said new tranny gears, are they metal and if so, where'd u get em..... I'm desperatly needin metal tranny gears :(

I dont think the picco .21 will go... That thing must be insane... I'm sure the sirio .23 will be more insane though...

ya its insane the powerband is amazing on it. but I've weighed the car down with aluminum real bad, roll cage and all. but it still rips
