Anyone here listen to Jazz? If so whats some good songs or CD's to get.

I just downloaded Miles Davis - It never entered my mind and I think its great. I'd like to expand my Jazz collection now.

Are you interest in the classic jazz or new smooth jazz~?

that does make a big difference. the differences between the two are quite drastic. if u want to see what i mean, download some progressive smooth jazz such as sade, or fourplay, and take a listen. after that, try something like Keely Smith, Artie Shaw, or Count Basie

ok, i didnt know there was different types of Jazz out there. I'll download some songs of the names listed above and let you know.

no sweat - the major difference, woodie, is that smooth jazz is what u will usually hear in upscale restaurants, or on the newer jazz radio stations, where as classical jazz is a bit more like blues, it has more emotion in it, alot of it was really popular in the 20's to 40's. it is where alot of the swing bands drifted off from. I'm a big jazz appreciator, and in my opinion, it is the most difficult form of music to play.

I like Ken Burns' documentary on Jazz. I was more into latin jazz like Arturo Sandoval and Tito Puente. Then I started liking the Buena Vista Social Club, even though they don't consider themselves latin jazz.

There is alot of good music out there, you just have to find your liking.
Guitar: Peter White, Marc Antoine, Acoustic Alchemy(New Wave), Earl Klugh, Craig Chaquica(New Wave), Lee Ritenour
Piano: Keiko Matsui, Bob James, Duke Ellington(Big Band), Ramsey Lewis, David Benoit
Sax: Dave Koz, John Coltraine, Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Boney James, Stan Getz
Groups: Rippingtons, Fourplay, BBW, Pat Metheny Group

Hay Humboldt,
Please be more specific with your posts.
You know we have rules about short spam posts.:mex:

I think its my turn to take a time out in the corner. Wow my rumpous hurts. Guess I'm the RCNT dog today and everyone had a bad day and came home and kicked me. I can take it because we all know I can dish it.

BTW I am serious those are some great albums. I didnt even know that culture exsisted that early in America. You will see some huge names on that list of artists.

There is a 3 CD compilation called "The Jazz Bar, The Finest Jazz Ballads & Blues" put out by ZYX Music, really good and a bargain to boot.

damn humboldt - i forgot all about cab calloway until u mentioned him! did u know that he married keely smith? she was a hottie for her day. cab has got to be one of the pioneers of the classic upbeat jazz, that good ol swing sound.

woodie - did u listen to any of this yet?

There have been a lot mentioned so far...

I would say to anyone who is starting out with Jazz is to pick up
Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis (one of the best jazz albums ever)
also get The Columbia Years by Miles Davis
Blue Train by John Coltrane is the most "accessible" John Coltrane album there is.
If you want to blow your mind and go "WTF" is to listen to some Theolonious Monk.
Can't forget Louis Armstrong and a whole bunch of others.
Pick up the Ken Burns cd that went with his documentary.
You should get the Ken Burns jazz documentary...I was mesmerized by that thing when it was on...now if only he would do a blues documentary..
