Well at the age of 24, I decided to join a gym, and from day 1 have been avid about going everyday. The problem I am having is where to start, I want to get "fit" then start building some bulk up top. I dont really wanna be some dude with chicken legs walking around with a built upper. I am also trying to drink healthier and kind of trying on the eating part... I weigh a buck ninety so I dont have a problem of gaining it, just dont want to be wasting my time if I have to change everything about my diet.... Any input on this would be great.

Thanks guys!

I don't go to the gym but I have been working out at my house as of late. I have a bow flex type machine that does 20 + exercises, a weight bench, a treadmill and a exercise bike. I am just starting so I can only offer you what I have learned so far. Drink lots of water. I drink 2 -3 full gatorade style bottles of water. The whole point of exercising is to loose weight or get pumped up. You don't want to kill yourself trying to overexert yourself by lifting to much. Start out small and work your way up. Exercising should be fun so you can keep at it. When an exercise gets to easy for you, add more weights or do more reps. Stretch before you start. Charlie horses and pulled muscles are no fun. Do basic stretches to loosen all your muscles before you start to work out. You should remember many of them from high school gym class. When ending your workout slow down your pace to allow your heart to slowly return to a normal rate.

I work out about 1 1/2 hours every mon, wed, and friday on the weight machines. I do the treadmill and exercise bike and the slam man on tues, thurs for an hour plus. Saturday I rest (they recommend you take a break from all exercises once a week to allow muscles to regenerate and grow) Sunday I do everything weights, treadmill, bike, slam man everything.

Make sure you can set aside time to work out almost all week if you can. Go with a friend if you can. Friends can help motivate you to do one more and you can have fun trying to one up the other on how many reps you just did or how much you bench. Just don't hurt yourself trying.

Finally icy hot will be your friend. You will be sore. The more you exercise and get used to it, the easier it will be to deal with. If you need it, don't fret to ask someone to help watch as a spotter.

I tried lifting weights once but gave it up 'cause they were heavy.

That and they asked you numerous times to put your pants on but you refused tehehe. :D

I've been hitting 10 minutes on everything that works me from the feet up and then benching as much as my little body can but 4 straight days and I am feeling it, and damn am i sore lol:hehe:

Gym gets ticked, when you hit him. He hits back HARD!

Oh wait, wrong Jim....

I ride bike, for exercise. (and fun) Was never really interested in gaining muscle mass. To quote a short lived TV show I always liked "I could do that, if I wanted to. The reason I don't do that, is because if I had arms like that I'd, have to buy all new shirts." :)

I hit the gym6 days a week for 2 hours a day for two years straight. Got bilked up and weighed 185 of basically pure muscle. Got swine flu for 2 weeks and lost over 35 lbs. Lost all muscle mass and definition. Said screw it.

You sound like by brother Alpine. He has almost no body fat and has worked out since his mid-teens (he's 43 now). I lived with him 15 years ago when I was going through college and when he got the flue a couple times, he'd lose 20lbs in a week. His metabolism was/is so high that if he isn't working out and eating like a mule, his body eats itself up almost.

I used to work out like a fiend in high school, grades 7-12. From grades 10-12, 3 hours a day m-f year round. Was young and stupid. Always was a bit heavy and never got "cut" like a few of the guys I worked out with. From 11-12, there was only one guy I could work out with that was lifting the same weight, so was easier/quicker to not have to change weights all the time. He weighed nearly 350lbs, 6'4", I was 225lbs 5',11", in my prime.

Then he and I met up on the football field at practice right before our homecoming game, doing a stupid drill that the team had done for decades. Head on, full tilt, one on one. Cracked two vertebrae in his spine, dislocated his shoulder and destroyed my right shoulder.

Was never really able to work out again, not without severe pain. Once I got to a certain point, then that was taken from me with a promise of never being able to lift like that again... pretty much makes going to the gym just a constant reminder of what I can't be.

I tried working out a couple years ago... didn't go well, could barely bench my weight without searing pain. Although, they had a leg press I never had in high school. Ours was an annoying pivot type machine that had foot rests that dug into your feet when doing a lot of weight.
