New to buggy's.

Have raced the Gs Storm now three weekends, have it tuned just like I want it but it has very poor acceleration. Need advice.

Thank you in advance!

Which engine? How old is the engine? Which plug? Which fuel? What is the ambient temperature?

Thank you for your response:
engine: GS .21 B-03
Glow Plug: OS 8
Fuel: Rocket fuel 30%
Ambient tems: outside 60's (Austin, Tx.)
Clutch bell: 14 tooth
spur gear: 42 tooth

I have never used that engine but tuning is quite general.

Does the engine sputter/blubber(struggle) when you give it gas? If it does you are more than likely too rich on the low end needle. Now if it seems as though it will die or cut out, then you are too lean. Let us know

Jon

yes it is a bit blubbery at take off but my lsn is barely 1 turn out, and my temps just after a 5 minute quilifier are pushing 175.

your to rich!!! you should see at least 200 deg temps. mine run nicely at about 250 260. lean them both a bit and it should wake up nicely

175? Engine isn't even warmed up. Need to warm it up then tune. Respectable operating temps are 200-215. When you run it can go up. but for tuning it is not enough.

when you say mine are you running same motor? Buggy?

Regardless of which engine, the tuning concept is the same. Your condition is general enough for others to help you with tuning. And yes I think you are too rich.

I am sorry I ment 275 not 175.
WHOA! TOO LEAN TOO LEAN!!! Richen the High speed needle!!! Try the pinch test after. Try to pinch the fuel line as close to the carb needle. If it wants to die or dies immediately when you pinch the line it is way too lean. If it wants idles without change for more than 3-4 seconds it is too rich.

wait he said he ment 275.... that is a bit high. BUT you may be lean on top, and rich on bottom. have you done the pinch test? will it idle well? for long amounts of time?

no i dont have the same mill, but as jon stated, the basics are the same for most engines.

Ok, pinch test (done repeatedly, down our longest straight-a-way, wide open throtle for 2 1/2 second count) bring car in pinch, 4 seconds, tells me low end is good run 1 tank like that good low end check temp. 275. My temp gun is not a cheapy ofna/duratrax/etc. it is an automobile grade temp. gun. And it has been compared to or tested against 3 other machanics I know who work in local dealerships. So I know my temp gun is with 3-5 degrees. The Tech support guy at GS says 280 is Totaly fine, if the engine produces plenty of trail and you are Happy with performance! But I am not comfortable with that.

sorry just re-read post, in your opinion 4 seconds on the pinch test is to long, I have been under the impression 4 seconds is ideal. But will defenantly lean the low end again.

hey i'd also go for mugan aluminium clutch shoes with 1mm springs, i know its not an engine tuning thing but i did this 2 my storm and it pulled like a train!

4 seconds is good.....your 175 temp was making everyone think it was running too rich.....sounds like th enext step is looking at clutch setups and gearing if you aren't happy w/ your holeshot........try dropping to a 13t CB, or go to a larger spur....like a 48-52..... this will drop your top speed a lil but that's not really what wins off road races is it......if you are using teflon clutch shoes you'll have a slow takeoff..the aluminum shoes and springs shakey said are pretty much industry standards for racing....
..when you said it's blubbery on take off are you letting it sit at all before the race at the line up? I rev the hell out of mine whiel the pit crew has it off the ground......If you're getting the engine to rev after 4 seconds of pinching the fuel line then you shouldn't be that bad on the bottom.....
