anatomy of pull starts....anybody no it??

ok i no a lil bout pull starts but pretend i dont no nuthing. "help I'm pulling my pull start but its seems like its slipping" ok what the proper way to clean a one way bearing and why does it slip so often and so soon.

and i no you're car runs funny in cold but how badly outta tune does it get?? i mean its acting really funny so i dont no ok thanks people

I would recommend running a search on the one-way bearing topic. There are a number of ideas on ways to clean it.

The hard way is to remove the pull start, then remove and clean the bearing. The frequency with which you do this is up to you. I have not experienced the slipping one way, but I have cleaned my one way bearing perhaps two or three times in a years time.

As for the way the car runs in the cold, the colder the air the more dense it is. Due to this you will have to tune your engine to handle the fact that it is getting more air. Also, you may have to pre-heat the engine in order to get it to start up properly. How cold is it where you are?
 
lol ya i have to take a hair drye to it sumtime and thanks you're smart it is really tricky to tune you really gotta pinponit every setting, but i run in holbrook massachusetts and every year it gets colder and colder, we had a week where it was -10 more or less all week but i wouldnt run in that, but its been around 20-30 latley i guess 35 thats about what i run it at thanks man
 
Were I in your shoes, I'd do the following:

1. Start with the needles at factory pre-sets for the engine in question. Then tune it a little bit richer, perhaps a 1/4 turn. I wouldn't go much richer due to the fact that the factory pre-sets for most engines are already on the rich side.

2. Hit the engine with a hair dryer for about two minutes prior to starting. AND use the hairdryer to help with the engine cooling down. Letting it cool down on its own in that cold is asking for internal damages (ie conrods warping)..

3. If you don't already have a temp gun, get one. It will help in determining the operating temps you are achieving in the cold weather. Due primarily to the fact that the engine will run much cooler in the 35 degree temps you want to play in, the performance of the engine might not be what you want because it never gets up to a proper operating temp (between 200 and 270 depending on the engine).

Other than the above, you should be able to tune for and have a blast in temps as cold as about 10 degrees Farenheit. Much colder and I'd say take a break.
 
ya man i been really worrying about overheating latley and its making me mad cuz i spit on head and it biols pretty quick even in these temps so how much is a good temp gunn? you got any suggestions thanks dude
 
I bought mine at Radio Shack for like $50. There are a number of good inexpensive ones out there, but the prices I have seen range from about $30 to as much as $90.

Here's the one I have:

I have the same gun sky has, and i swear by it.

Use it frequently as you start your day. Once your comfortable with the temp range your running in, check it at least once every other tank to make sure nothing is out of wack.

As for the one-way, i clean mine about every gallon (2 months). I do this to avoid having it start slipping on me during a bash session. I take the pull starter housing off, carefully, don't want the spring inside the winder to become the spring "outside" the winder as it is very hard to put back in. I pull the one-way bearing off the shaft, soak it in denatured alchohol. I twist a paper towel and put some alchohol on the and and stick it in the one-way. Once it's sticking through, i spin the one-way forward and backward. I keep moving up the twisted towel as i'm spinning to remove the dirt. Then, i clean the shaft it spins on with paper towel and more alchohol.

Once it's clean, i put a few drops of 3-in-1 oil inside the bearing and spin it on the shaft a few times. Put it back together and your good to go.

If it's been a long time and the cleaning doesn't work, your bearing or the shaft it spins on is more than likely worn to much for a cleaning to have any affect.
 
No problem. Just doing a little policing of the site here and there. It's great to raz your friends, but sometimes it sets a not so great example for others. Keep on keepin' on.
 
i just dont get it! i just cleaned it thougorly last night and the darn thing slipped again tonigh! where does this dirt come from and why does mine slip so soon, my friend andy does same thing big cleaning net day or even brand new bearing slips like crazy! so i dunno i think ill grab a new one way and deeffintley sum 3-in-1 lube!
 
It's more than likely the the shaft the oneway spins on that's worn. I would advise you to get a new one of those before using the new bearing. Otherwise, the old shaft that is worn will wear out the new bearing your about to put in.
