RC Driving Style
Ok I just installed a cooling head about 6 tanks of gass ago, doesn't run tremendously cooler but it runs cooler. Also Just installed a motor saver air filter yesterday and when i was driving my car i noticed in my routien temp check it was hotter than before.

So i went and read the motor saver instruchions and they said that i may need to richen my hsn. So i went out and started richening it today, when it was cooler in the evening without the body on. I got the temp down a little but when i drive 3/4-full throttle in the grass it runs in the 50s and 70s. This sounds fine i know but how will it be ok when i run it w/ the body on. Maybe I'm just thinking to much but o well.

I richened it up one full turn gradually and theres a steady stream of smoke. when i go to start it up it sounds to rich and grogy. It was a little humid today and I'm running 20% nitro and 16% oil.

I just tune mine so it runs well, and stays under 280, so it spunds like it is ok to me except the "grogy" part. Does it seem grogy the whole time, or only untill it warms up? Grogy when cold is OK. If it is grogy the whole time, is it at only low speeds, or is it at all speeds? If only at low speeds you may have to lean your LSN a little. If it is at all speeds you may have to lean them both a little, but with 3/4 throttle in the grass, and running 250-270 it sound like the HSN is ok. Make sure you have a hole cut in the windshield, and cut out around the engine another inch at least. Then you shouldn't have much fluctuation in temps w/, or w/out the body. Just my $0.02

Just a note on running in the grass. Running in grass of any height other than perhaps that of a golfing green, puts a large amount of strain on the drive train and thus the engine. That would cause the engine to run hotter than expected.

As for the MotorSaver and running with or without a body, if the body is properly ventilated you should have not problems. Richening up the HSN is a common issue with the MotorSaver as it allows the engine to breathe much better and can create an artificial lean condition. So, richening it up like the instructions recommended is the correct action.

I suggest trying to run it on some dirt off road or perhaps on the pavement for a little bit while you check the temperatures. You might find that the thing is running just fine.

its grogy when i first start to accererate so i think i need to lean my lsn. thanks for the advice ill start cutting the wind shield out.

To Skymaxx i did notice the temp diffs cuz i would drive it inthe grass chaectemp then drive onthe road and check the temp and as you said there was a big difference.

thanks for the advice.

No problem. I always tune my engines by running them in on concrete. Does two things: 1. Gives me a decent setting for the engine, 2. Draws an audience. :D

This is kinda switching the question but are savages finiky and hard to tune like the t-maxx? Iv tried tuning this thing and its either to cool or to hot. I here dont get anything traxxas makes, because their hard to tune and the engins are finiky. It keeps dying on me and stuff. Iv tried and I'm kinda tired of dealing w/ it, I'm also hearing they break really easy which is kinda funny cuz nothing on mine has broken yet. It was a good start but i want to move on to a savage. One of my friends has one and he tuned it once and hasnt had to tune it again for a long time.I mean either their really hard to tune or I'm doing something seriously wrong. I thought Maybe yall can help me. out.

Nope, you are not losing your mind. The TRAXXAS engines, the carb in particular, is notorious for being finnicky and does not maintain a tune very well.

another thing that i found out yesterday that causes temps to skyrocket without you noticing...i lost 4WD in my 24.7 maxx due to a broken cvd pin...had RWD only. no matter..i jsut kept tearing it up doing huge dust cloud drifts and burnouts in the dirt. well i guess the engine not having no traction was able to rev way to high for a couple minutes and when i went to check the temp it was 330! my 24.7 usually always runs 230 off-road. usaully I'm able to tell when the engine is starting to run hot..but in all the dirt and rocks spewing i couldnt tell how much power the truck was putting out.

The savage is a good solid truck. As for tuning, it depends on what engine you go with. If your on the fence about making a 21 maxx, don't. Get a savage and avoid the headache.

I can't say anything for tuning of the savage engine as the one in my savage isn't stock. It's an Omega 21 Comp engine. On a normal day, beating around in dirt, short grass and concrete, my temps float around 240 all day long.

I've noticed humidity really drives up the temps. 70 degrees out side with 95% humidity will make for a hot engine. 70 degrees outside with 20% humidity makes for a good day. But even with 90 degrees outside, as long as the humidity is low, ambient temp doesn't make a huge difference. At least until you drop below 50...

So getting a new engin for my maxx wouldnt help? Me and my bro were just talkin and he said just get a new engine that will save you money. Wouldnt getting a bigger and different brand engine be ok or are all engines for the t-maxx finiky. All i want is to get a good rc vhicle that will last long and be a relatively good price but thats easier said than done.

I figured my tuning problem out. ya i was turning the needles to much at a time i turned them in about 1/32 or about the head of a flat screwdriver. Its runnning ok for now, well see what happens when i get the body on.

I know the traxxas 2.5 is finicky regardless what vehicle it's on. As for getting a bigger and better engine, sure they are out there. The epic 18 (around $150), orion 18(around $90), sirio 18 (around $180) and the new 21 medium block engines... but if you go over 1.8-2hp, your asking for a new headache.

Long story short, if you want more power, get a truck that can handle it. If you want it a little bit faster with lower engine temps, you need to loose some weight or get a bigger engine. Losing some wieght is cheaper. Getting a more powerfull engine is fun, until your drive train dies... then it's another $200 or so to make the drive train handle it.

There are lots of threads about 21 maxx's and I'm one of the few that attempts to keep people from doing it. Sure, a 21 supermaxx is cool, but the $ to get it stable is nuts.

Do what you will, but my advice is to keep the maxx, convert it to 2 wheel drive, put a 18 in it and buy a savage to go 4 wheeling with.

Yes. When the time is right for you get a new engine. Or at least an aftermarket carb. (If it's cheap, because I haven't played with it yet) The "finniky" tunning of the 2.5 should not follow to a differant engine. I am looking at the Sirio .18, but for even less money, if you have a tight budget, I've heard good things about the Wasp .18

until the piston and sleeve are worn I'm going to just be patient w/ it and try to figure things out.I think i have the tuning ok and having this truck being so sensative may test my tuning skills. Now hearing what yall had to say I'm just going to run it and try to do things wright w/ the engine for now .Until the engine is shot I'm going to just going to keep it.But when she dies its on to the savage ss kit for me.
-Thanks for the help and advice

IMHO, the orion 18 wasp is a bit on the weak side. It's ok for a 2wd maxx with an 72/18 gearing but asking much more than that from it is to much. Mine, tuned for relatively good performance, runs a consistent 250-260. It also won't really pull a wheelie, and that's with the front diff gone, not as heavy tires (10oz vs 14oz stock) and plastic gears in the trans vs metal that I had for my 21 conversion.

Which engine are you running? The old trx 15 or the new 2.5?

Personally, I wouldn't waste any more $ on it. I did and it didn't get me anywhere but broke... Drive it until it dies then replace it with something less picky. Supposedly, it's supposed to be a good performing engine, just hot. After I spent $50 on a head and $60 on an OS carb, mine still ran like crap and too hot to keep running. I gave up 3 weeks after I bought it and started down the wretched path of a 21 maxx.

Now as you can see from my sig, a 21 maxx isn't one of my current trucks. A 2wd maxx and a savage. With these 2 trucks set up the way I have them, I can spend a whole weekend driving and bashing with little to no fixing.

I'm thinking about puting the .18 orion in it when it is burnt but will i have to change it to 2wd? Second how would i change it to 2wd?

You don't have to convert it, but it will work that engine pretty hard. With mine lightened up and running 2wd, my orion wasp 18 runs about 250 average temp. That's also with 72/18 gearing. I only bash and not race. But regardless whether I'm on hard pack dirt or short grass, it runs around 250-270 and I do run pretty rich. Any richer and it loads up really bad.

Basically, to run 2wd, you take of the front diff completely and disassemble the slider shafts so all you have on the front tires are the axle pieces. Do the same with the slider coming out of the trans. You need the piece that the brake hex sits on, but you can disassemble the slider so all that's left is that little piece.

I didnt get a thing you said, i dint know what or where half that stuff is. What gearing do you think mine is its stock t-maxx. Sorry iv only had mine since may 5 and am still learning. sorry
