I just read the HPI website and it says that the new Savage X now comes with alloy diff cups. Is this the same as the bulletproof diffs or do I need to order them? Thanks.

Alloy != bulletproof.

The newer savage's run alloy cups with machined steel ring/pinion gears. In the old days (savage pre-x), you had plastic cups and cast gears.

Bulletproof came out when people started chewing up the machined gears... Personally, I run alloy diff cases with machined gears/alloy cups and haven't had any diff issues other than a bearing going out on me once in a while.

The sucky thing about alloy cases is that I haven't come across one yet that was split like the X/XL is, so you can't use the heavy duty output shafts as they don't fit through the holes.

Old (cast gear with plastic cup):

Uses the cast gear:

Bulletproof (fewer teeth that are larger):

Can't seem to find the machined 43T gear... I know mine came from a savage X as they were listed like that on ebay with the bulkheads intact, which differed from my older savage bulkheads.

EDIT:
Very odd... I can't find that machined gear at all anywhere now. Appears they only list the cast ring gear and bulletproof. The X manual lists the alloy cup, but the cast gear. The XL lists it as the alloy cup with the machined gear I can't find. I'm looking at the manuals I downloaded in 2008/2009... suppose I should look up on HPI's site and see if the new manuals list the BP gear set instead now.

Found 86922 (machined gear set) on HPI's site:
http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/86922.html

Also, looking at the manual for the XL, it is in fact now running the BP gearset.

The X RTR is now running something I haven't seen, sintered BP set:

The X SS kit is still listed in the manual as running the cast gear....

Apparently the HPI guys are too busy with RTR documentation to update the kit versions... It's probably discontinued now anyway.

The new 2011 X4.6 has Sintered Diffs with alloy casings. They are considered "Bullet-Proof" for Nitro & I've yet to see one broken... The XL shares the original "Bullet-Proof" diffs with the Flux & they have been proven to be just that "Bullet Proof" on Nitro & Lipo.

If your running Nitro, The 2011 Savage X4.6 has Diffs strong enough to take whatever you throw at em.

The SS & XL Kits have not been updated for a while, the XL always had the BP Diffs, no update, but they may have added a 2.4g system to them.

I know the XL didn't always have them... I have the manual that shows the machined diffs.

I wonder if it's marked on the box's in the LHS as to which diffs they have... Probably not.

They have i bought one last year when i got my tax returns it has the 2.4ghz.

Thanks, that must of been a while back that they came with std diffs. I went a step further and run CEN diffs. I like the spider gears and casing over the HPI set up.

Yeah, that was the other go to before the bulletproof ones existed. Those were some meaty looking gears that CEN made.

Yup, IMO best Diffs for the Savage too. I've seen some HPI spiders go out a few times, but the CEN spiders are overkill. My Off-Road XL Basher runs them, still piecing that Truck together, waiting on a few bits in the mail.

Here she is so far
