It doesn't *have* to be but I'd recommend it. Most 2-stage filters are designed so you throw out the outer element once it gets too dirty. The stickiness of air filter oil will help keep the particles from gumming up your internal element too fast.

if it's anything like a k&n air filter = the dirtier it gets the better it works

I've always run 2 stage filters, and I never oiled the outer foam. On a dry dusty red clay track the outer foam would be taken off and blown out. Lots of red dust, but the inner oiled filter would stay clean for many long days of running. It's purpose is to make it easy to clean, yet safe to block any fine dust with the oiled inner foam.

where do u find the k&n filters for the rc's i have asked at my lhs befor and the couldn't find them

Ebay.

And with what you said Rolex, The firestorm I'm getten has a 2 stage, how often should I clean the inner, or 2ed stage?

1. AVOID the K&N for R/C cars. They are a paper element, and don't go down to the mili micron filtration that these little engines need. Yeah, I know, you lose the cool factor.

2. I didn't clean the inner foam till I could actually see the muddy dust starting to collect on it. The outer ring, dry, actually does wonders for keeping the inner filter clean.

Yes they do. Nice bling for show, but not good for go.

WOW.webp

impressed

rolex your the MAN, everytime you post = u impress this poor uneducated unworthy hick from the north...lol thumbs up!

Thanks alot man, i was looking into the K&N myself, the two stage have always made more sense for Dirty dust and track. I will stick with whats made for R/C :)

Yes they are pure bad news for a RC engine. They just do not filter enough to work. The oil oiled two stage is still around for a reason, they work.

I didn't know pushing an rc on carpet indoors could get a filter soon dirty....

Vacuume your rugs!:D

I run a 2 stage air filter and I oil both stages.

I then wrap the air filter in a compression bandage that you can buy at the drug store. It comes in a roll and I cut off about 2 feet and wrap it around the air filter. It is self adhesive to itself.

When the compression bandage gets dirty I remove it and replace it with fresh bandage. I have heard some people call this bandage VET WRAP. I know I found it at CVS and there were a number of different brands of it on the shelf.

I have not had to clean either stage 1 or stage 2 of my air filter in about a month because the VET WRAP catches the dust and dirt.

With the exception of the baja which has a team gonads outer filter which is a two stage by itself and then it goes over the inner filter making it a three stage filter system. I oil the inner part of the team gonads and oil the inner filter with great results. For the nitro rigs, I usually just oil the inner filter with the exception of my OS .12 which has the three disks that need to be oiled. About 10 tanks or visible dirt is when i clean them.
