I was wondering, I saw somewhere that u could use WD-40 instead of after run oil. Is this okay or was the guy that said that a total dumbass. I gettin da buggy on wed, so I need to get my facts strait. So WD-40, will it damage my engine at all if I use it instead of afterun oil? Hope not...

traxxas states that WD40 is okay to use as after run oil. but i offer this question? If you could choose between something called WD40, and AFTER RUN OIL, to use as after run oil, and both were the same price, which they are - whch would u choose? u already know the answer. Stick with actual ARO - thats what its designed for, and will work the best. Besides - its cheap!

I read in RCCA online and they said that wd-40 is good for cleaning purposes but to always use denatured alcohol afterwords. THere is something in wd-40 that helps to keep dirt from clinging onto it. check it out online for yourself.I will look for it and post a link.

Definatly use after run oil. WD40 is water based and isnt as thick as ARO. ARO costs about the same as WD40 and probably will last just as long cause you only need a couple drops to do the job.

Does it really matter what brand of ARO you use? My new 12RSS is going to start and I was told to put some for extra lubrication before I crank her up.

I've used it in my .15FE and it is still running nearly 15 gallons later. But I'm purchasing ARO for my .21bb soon. I'm sure going with ARO is a much better choice but WD-40 is not harmful. It prevents rust and lubricates. Same exact purpose ARO is for. WD-40 stands for Water Displacement test # 40. That means it repels water so rust can't happen!

I have been using WD-40 as a cleaner for at least fifteen years
in my model boats with no problems at all.

This is what I do .

After I am finished for the day I will use WD-40 to clean the engine out of any left over nitro.With the plug loose I conect it through the needle with some fuel line and keep spraying short bursts until it comes through the glow plug hole .
Remember short busts loosened plug and carefull when turning over the motor you dont want to load up or lock the motor.


I then blow out as much of the leftover WD-40 as I can with the plug out , don't forget to cover the engine with a rag.

I then feed Marvels Mystery oil through the carb slowly with the plug loosened off until I see it come up through the glow plug hole.
Same as WD-40 take care not to load the motor up.

Tighten the plug and you are done.


The biggest problem with WD- 40 is that it will evaporate over time leaving all the metal parts unprotected but it is great for washing out any left over nitro and it is cheap.
As for Marvels Mystery oil you can buy a large can at Walmart for a fraction of what the LHS sells after run oil for .

I have used WD-40 to clean my engines after they get dirt or water in them. After you use it though, like Tim-K said is it will evaporate so after you are done using the WD-40 make sure to use Marvels Mystery Oil or ARO.

I use Marvel's Mystery Oil for after run oil, and according to HPI's website you can use it for air filter oil too. Haven't tried it out, what do you guys think of that? Heres the link.

WD40 is a water displacement formula. Hence the name. In all reality it does the exact same thing that ARO is supposed to do, keep moisture away from engine components. IMO there nis nothing wrong with using WD40 day to day. Storage is a different story though. I would definately prefer to use ARO for longer term because of it's thicker consistency.

If all you have is WD40 then use it, no big deal. But ARO is made for one reason and it's cheap.... the decision is yours.

I use ARO after EVERY run.

I am convinced ARO is Marvel Mystery Oil. I've used both and think they are one in the same. And think about it......... do you actually think someone went out and formulated an oil for a market as small as the R/C market is, just for protecting an engine after running? I think not. Find out who's actually making or bottling the ARO and trace backwards from there. I'll bet you end up at Marvel Mystery Oil

Have to agree with a few people's comments here, I used the WD-40 and a long storage and landed up with rust inside my engine and shortly after that was replacing the piston/sleeve. Started using ARO and had no problems. Also use ATF fluid to and no problems. ATF-automatic trans. fluid

Marvels Mystery oil is the way to go .
ARO is just a scam think about it they sell you a couple ounces for ten bucks
and a can of Marvels mystery oil is only a couple for ten times as much and yes automatic transmision fluid works as well .
One thing I have learned being in this hobby for over fifteen years is that I avoid buying anything but the basics from my hobby store because I can generally get it much cheaper somewere else and like paris001 said do you really think they made an after run oil just for us , not likely.

Man, this thread is another one resurected from the grave.

Looks, smells but are you 100% sure? I'd just stick to the stuff marketed as ARO. Doesn't cost much and it doesn't take much to use for storing (3-5 drops). Why "try" something you're not completely sure of.
