Adapters no good?

Just a quick noob question: Why would it be bad to use a battery plug adapter? Is it unsafe? Does it waste power? Does it really even matter?

I'd imagine because of the extra resistance it gives, but honestly if it's decent quality on a low powered system I wouldn't worry.
