Hey Guys,

Man this halloween was one I will never forget. It was a very busy, exciting, and somewhat profitable one. I bought a truck, and finally went to closing on my house. After what seemed like an eternity waiting to close it finally happened. We had a ratified contract by the middle of September, and we had to wait until halloween to get a closing date. It was a good thing I closed when I did too. I was supposed to buy the truck on Tuesday the 1st of November.... after I had the big check, but I got a call on Saturday from the salesman asking me to come in on Monday morning the 31st and pick the truck up. He said he would take a couple of hundred off the options I wanted installed after the sale and he would let me write a check and then call him to tell him when to cash it. That way he got the numbers for the end f the month. So I thought ok, the worst that can happen is that I don't close and I have to come back in and finance it for a bit. Luckily I closed that afternoon, and was handed the big check and this morning transfered the appropriate funds to cover the check for the truck.

It is a bit of a sting writing a check that big, but the good thing is I own a brand new truck out right and do not have to make payments. That is a good thing.. I will save a bit of money down the road with not making any interest payments. I was sweating a bit, until they handed me the check, and I had it safely in the bank. It was very exciting. The truck I bought was a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 4 door, 4x4 with the TRD Offroad package and all the goodies inside. I even sprung for a 6 disk CD Changer and 6 speaker stereo. Halloween was a day of many firsts... First time I had ever sold a house, and bought a truck in the same day. First time I had ever seen my name on a check that big, and the first time I have ever owned a car free and clear. The only bitch of it all is that my car insurance went up 264 bucks a year because I lost the multi-policy discount with my insurance company. Oh well. I guess there is always a bit of pain with pleasure. I will never forget this day, thats for sure! Now I have to figure out how to properly invest the rest. That ought to be fun since I know nothing about that sort of thing. Thanks for all of your help and advice guys.

buy land.....
I went in w/ my folks on 20 acre lots in N. FL.....we bought 2 plots for 55k each and we just got some offers for 170k on one of em...we bought end of last year.....now I only have a 1/4 of that but it was done outright as well......all I can say is that equity has already surpassed the value of my IRA account I started almost 14 years ago......

Grats on all the firsts!
You now have some ching in your pocket. Getting it is the easy part, keeping it isn't so simple. Don't just run out and buy the first investment a friend tells you is good. You will either need to educate yourself on the power of money or pay someone who knows to do it for you.

Until that time, Ill suggest that you get a GOOD interest bearing savings account or a money market account until you decide what your going to do with it and when your going to do it.

There are some great interest rates out there for short term holding. Some are close to 3.5% Take advantage of this until you decide what to do.

Congrats man,Good luck with that yota, dude i wish i had to pay that much for insurance on a brand new rig,i pay that much in only a month in a half.lucky bumm.

Hey Ed,

Thanks for the advice. That is basically what I am doing now.... just kinda reading about what kinds of things are out there. The money is in a money market account now, and I am looking in maybe some longer term CD's to put some of it in. The rest I will keep in the Money Market account. There is alot of info out there. It will take some time, but eventually I will figure out what to do with it. Maybe in the mean time I can take a little and get a new nitro? :)

My insurance is not that low. I wish it was. It went up $200 some bucks a year. I am paying somewhere around 125 a month, something like that. I wish it were that low. It should go down again once I get married, and have teh multi-policy discount again. Thanks for the well wishes my friend. Have a great day.

Hey Plaid,

I don't know if I could afford to buy any land here in MD. Land here is as rediculously as high as the house prices. That and there are so many restrictions on how much land you need to put a house on, and the fact that since we are so close to the Chesapeake Bay we have critical area problems. I am always looking for a great deal on some land, but right now an acre of land around here is going for like 80 90 grand. Take care my friend.

Thanks my friend! Yeah, really, I bet I could throw one hell of a shindig! Actually my best friend is flying me to Vegas for the Super Bowl. I am sure there is something to do in Vegas. I was thinking about going to the Nascar track out there. We shall see. Take care my friend....

do like i did when i was younger.. go buy a beater car.. for like 200 bux and put it on your insurance.. you will get the multi and accualy pay less per month.. all the car has to do it be driveable so they can insure it.. (mine wasn't even that!!) it was an old chevy luv, never even started that thing, it just set behind the shed.. still got it but its in arkansas, if your interested

not sure but look into the tax break you get when you sell property and use the profit to buy another house or property or whatever......I'm sure someone here knws alot about that stuff....I know I was able to avoid paying alot of tax on my condo profit by having someone else do all that crap.....I need to start learning more about investing myself....I get 2 statements from investors every month from retirement accounts and I just leave them in the envelope....I don't even want to think about them until I need em........that truck is fast huh???

Hey man, just want to pass along my congratulations! That's awesome! I'm not going to pretend to give any advice on what to do with the money 'cause I'm just about funtionally retarded in that arena. I give my extra cash to a financial advisor I've known for years and he takes care of it. What I do know is that he prefers mutual funds over single stocks. While they may grow slower, they fall slower too. 'Bout all I know!

Enjoy your new truck, man!

Well I haven't gone flat out in it yet... still going through the 1K mile break in period. It moves right nice though. 4.0 Liter 236 HP V6. It gets the job done. I can't wait to take it off road and get some mud on it!

Thanks man... I wish I had more time behind the wheel.... Right now it is just back and forth to work. I need to take a day off and go find a way off the beaten path and get some mud on it. Take care...

As for land always being a good investment....NOT. The way things are now, yes,but...........I remember my folks paying 14% interest rates and such on HOUSES!!! The market may not always be there, all it takes is the rates to go wacky. We(parents) lost our asses when the steel industry dried up in western Pa, within 5 years most houses dropped like 1/2 in price!!!

Congrads on the sale though, feels good to finally get the closing out of the way? lol

Tom, sounds like ya have a hell of a friend there bro. Hope you have a great time!!

I hand off all mine to my financial advisor too. The Ol Lady! :hammer:
Been trying to put as much as I can into my 401K. Think I'm putting 12% in. About the only way I'm able to put anything back.
It never fails, we think we are saving pretty good and then something happens.....

I know what you mean about being able save, and just when you think you have one foot out of the hole... something comes along and pushes you right back in. I am taking some of the money made from the sale to help my mom out a bit. I mean it stinks because I would love to spend the moeny elsewhere, but its my mom and I would never think of doing anything but help her out. So I know what you mean about the savings thing. You never know what tomorrow is going to bring I guess. I look at it this way... at least I have my health and beer! Take care my friend.
