hey people,

bit of a problem, my .28 ansmann/hpi F4.6 engine is having issues, i keep finding aluminium filings in it,

its been running well tune has been consistent but eating glow plugs, ( hot generic N3 and medium os8 ) I'm about to try a cold plug for the glow plug issue,

what could be causing the aluminium filings, i don't see anything in the crankcase that looks like it's wearing,
the piston and sleeve look fine no scoring or pitting,

but on the back side of the con rod it looks like it's worn it was a new piston and sleeve so what I'm wondering is could a new conrod cause this to happen,

to eliminate that as a cause I'm going to put the old piston and sleeve conrod in to see if the same happens

what things could cause aluminium filings to show up in an engine ( started after new piston sleeve and conrod )

Sounds bad. Are you sure you're not running too lean? And what do you mean by the back side of the conrod as there are multiple backs to the conrod dependant on what angle you look at the engine from, I know its stupid but... And also, we could do with some pictures- it sounds like you've installed something wrong or put something In with wrong spacing.

Are you sure you put the rod in the right way. Some of them go in only one way.

Always take picture when you take something a part so you will know how it goes back together.

here are the pictures, i have since removed the piston etc and noticed wear on the side of the conrod closest to the crankshaft, looks like the new crankshaft was rubbing the conrod causing the aluminium shavings,

these pictures have bee taken after changing the crankshaft to the old one and there are no new shavings

also I've been working on nitro engines for quite some time i know what way things go back together just never experienced this before

sorry about the quality using my iphone

When you take the piston/sleeve out, do you see any where where the conrod may be contacting the crank case? Is this a pull-start engine? Is the OWB inside or outside the engine? If inside, do you see any wear on the backplate or OWB? Also, pull the crank and look at the bearings as best as you can. I had a new engine split a bearing ball in half and it went through my engine like a grenade.

the conrod was rubbing on the new crankshaft, looks like its worn enough now that its no longer creating aluminium filings as a precaution i put the old crankshaft in there any way

Well, it sounds to me like something was rubbing- but if you've replaced the worn part and it now has no problems then it should be Ok. It may of just been a manufacturing error or an installation error.
