I have a crankcase that I was wanting to build for power but I don't know if it is a .21 or .28 engine, it has a bigger bore than my .21 that I run

My Xterminator came with the silver/natural finish case and Blue Head that could be the 247. I dont know what the black case is. I put an SH .28 in it which is probably overkill but it rips. It was about $100. I get that you want to rebuild and so did I, that fact is you most likely wont find parts for it or they could be more expensive than a new engine, plus the time it will consume...

Ok, thank you very much. I was worried about that. You just saved me a lot of time and money

You can look on ebay and try to find a similar engine for sale, those things are maybe 20 years old now? I was trying to do exactly that, save you time and money because I went down that same road!

I found one on Ebay for $79 unknown condition, turns over freely. So does mine yet the piston has chunks of metal melted into the top.
Did it have the silver head?
I got this motor with a lot of parts for free and it didn't have a head or backplate. There was a chunk taken off of the piston skirt and the connecting rod was worn out

I dont know much about all of the XTM motors, I just know there were a few of them. The black case, a silver/natural finish case with a small head, then later a bigger head. I am just certain I have the "247". The only black case on ebay right now has a silver head but the seller doesn't know what it is.
What I found for the madstorm is that its a monster truck? In that case I would say a .28.
Here is what I put into a 1/8 buggy:

You dont have to get this exact one, its just what fit my application. Its a low rpm motor that makes power down low for a monster truck. To be honest it is not the perfect motor for a buggy but it does well!

Thanks for the info. I have a .21 that was locked up that came out of the madstorm when I got it. It is mildly built and makes good power

I would replace it with a decent .21 or a .28 then. That engine was probably not set back to bottom dead center after a run hence the lockup? Bummer. A .28 would be a real ripper in the madstorm. Whatever you decide .21/.28, get something that has the same exhaust exit such as rear or left/right, and most likely pull start unless you use a bump box. Engines without pull starts are said to have less resistance which equals free revs and more power. No pull start obviously requires the box.
I only suggest the SH because its extremely economical in price. When I was rebuilding my XTM someone told me dont get anything but an OS engine. OK, they are nice engines, but this is a vintage car and wont be raced......why get a $300 engine for a $150 car I wonder? To each their own I guess. I have had zero issues with that SH, it broke in well, tunes super easy with the proper fuel, and is very fun to drive in the Xterminator. Plenty of power in a buggy and I bet it would be great in a truck, it is advertised for a truck after all.

I'll check that out, it sounds a lot better than what I've got
