How does a 2 speed transmission work? Do i have to do anything? Like flip a switch or is it automatic? Just curious....

It most cases it's adjustments made to a spring so the second gear will kick in at a certain point. When the engine hits a certain rpm the spring allows whatever mechanism it has to throw the pawls out to engage second gear. Depending on the vehicle and setup (racing) you'll set it to kick in about 20-30 feet.

Yea its like in a car on the vehicles I've had. You just put the pedal (or trigger) to the metal (or plastic) and it takes care of the rest. You can adjust it to shift at different points for different conditions if you want by just turning a screw. I have a normal setting that I usually drive with, and a piss off the neighbor setting where it doesn't shift it just revs really highs and screams like its gonna blow up. Thats only for when my neighbor is being a b word though.

Some vehicles like the Maxx series have a dedicated servo to shift, also.

Yes but that's only for reverse. I think the E-maxx has a manual shift on the fly function though.

hahaha my MTX has an external one of those it sits on the side of the track (looks a lot like a concrete berm) waiting for me to loose it at WOT.

It's the Emaxx that uses the reverse function button on the controller to manually shift up or down. The nitro version does it automatically and uses the extra servo to shift from forward to reverse.
