2.5 engine backfires

my dad and brother were working on my brothers tmaxx today and where trying to get the engine running they called me and told me the engine back fired. my brother just bought the maxx and were not sure if the engine runs but it has plenty of compression. any way my question is do nitro engines back fire and if so what causes it?

Never have I heard of a nitro engine backfiring.

neither have i and i didn't hear this thats why i was asking! lol

so we were messing with it today and it made a loud pop and shot smoke out the carb. upon further inspection it was spitting gas out of the cooling head! i tightened the cooling head let it rest and the beast came to life!!!! so it was backfiring because of loss of pressure!
