1st time Newbie at the Off-Road track!! Ughh!!

RC Driving Style
So I finally made it to the local off road track here in Southern Maine. Oh boy 2wd stadium trucks are a handful! Most of the guys had Savages and Tmaxx's, I was the only one with 2wd. One guy has a diesel powered Savage! Needless to say I need A LOT of practice. My RC10GT and Rush EVO were upside down more than right-side up! Oh well I had fun. Best 10 bucks I spent in a long time! Can't count how many times I popped tie rods off!! I need a good tire set-up for these trucks. Running x tires on rear and ribbed on front. I think being a Newbie I should have sprung for 4WD truck.
 
Depends really on what track it is. You need to set up your ride according to track style and driving style. Trust me I was all over the place with the Revo 3.3 and they call that thing a race style truck to compete in the UMT class. LMAO if I was driving that class, it would be called UNSKILLED Monster Truck class...I wish I had sometime to try racing out. Glad you had fun though.
 
No not really. You should check out the top drivers and see what they are using for the track. See what type of set up they have.
 
Well they race on Saturday, so I plan on heading up to watch the action. The guys tonite had mostly Monster Trucks, one 4wd truggy, and one buggy. Good drivers though, definitely have some experience under their belts.

I was thinking the same thing as I crashed at almost every corner, even wiped out on the straight. Just goes to show that a decent truck means nothing without at least a little driving skill LOL

Have to admit the stock tires on the Revos suck for track but I am sure bashing.... Who cares. The CRT I was running with or at least after had the stock brick rtr tire patterns and it was hooked up.

The bad thing is that I wasn't running the stock tires, I had the Sporttraxx tires on it. They also sucked on the hard dusty track. I just bought a set of Bow Tie 40's with Wabash 23mm wheels so maybe they will help compensate for my sorry driving.

Remember, slower is faster for someone new. As far as that steel ramp is concerned. Try blipping the throttle a bit when you're off the ramp, the key is to land on all four wheels. I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, when you land on all four wheels, it' keeps the forward momentum going into dumping the kenetic energy into the ground, ie. divit in the dirt.

I've been racing for about three months now. Just concentrate on making it around the track rather than doing it quickly.
 
another thing to look for if your racing competition is body styles the best drivers are using......dont have to be the same exact body but one similar in shape such as the front grill, front winshield transition, the way its mounted, etc.........for the first 3 weeks of my racing beginning i ran realy slow........got a feel of the track & the best ways to take the turns to cut time........now I'm winning races most of the time at the tracks in tyler.......
 
Usually, the setup I use 99% of the time is the factory out-of-box setup. Nothing beats practice! Practice with the factory setup, and then once you get the hang of the track, then start making adjustments.
 
Man with all this being said. Don't forget to have fun! If it wasn't going to be fun than why do it right? Don't get so stressed about the whole thing. Get your rig set up but have fun man!!

Yeah its diesel. Not sure what brand, but I can get more info next time I go up, he's always there. They run A LOT cooler than nitro too he says. Looked like a big block. Truck screwed around the track, blowing smoke the whole time.
 
You sure it wasn't a 4-cycle and not a deisel? I've seen a few 4-cycle nitro engines run in vids... creates quite the smoke cloud. Cool sound though.

I didn't think diesel worked with these engines since you don't have a way to adjust the timing. See what kind of engine it is, just for curious fools like me.

Wait a minute, you're supposed to have fun? Jetmech is a friggin' liar!
 
No No dude it was diesel, I watched him put the diesel fuel in. The motor looked like any old nitro motor, but I didn't really look that closely. He ran it for at least 10 laps around the track and the head was so cool you could touch it. He was a experienced. He looked at my RC10GT and said "poop I had one of those before the frames were blue". I'll get more info this weekend.
 
I've read about it from when guys tried it back in the day. There were conversion kits for normal engines, but I don't think they worked very well since the timing of the engine is relatively fixed.

But your right about the price of fuel... it's almost worth buying a 1/5 scale with a fuel engine in it. $25 per gallon/$1000 (cheap side of a fuelie) is still 40 gallons... Although, on a 10 gallon average per engine/pinch/rebuild, that's at least 3 engines with a pinch/rebuild or 4 engines new tossed into the total cost of nitro.
