So I'm going to pick up one or the other, obviously the vxl is faster but I'm buying this one for my son so i was thinking about buying the brushed slash and when he can handle that upgrade to brushless. Is there any other advantages of the brushless vs the brushed besides the motor/speed controller?

there aren't any differences that i can see other than the speed control and motor. That said, its only $100 more for the brushless motor and esc. Its a solid setup and one of the best you will find for $100. With that you get the reliability and performance of brushless, and also the ability to run lipo's later on if you choose to do so. You can set the esc to trainer mode which will reduce the power and allow you son to learn with it first.

I agree get the brushless an set it in trainer mode. I'm sure he will get tired of a brushed sooner than you think:D

It's less expensive to purchase the brushless now than to convert to it later. I priced the upgrade ESC and motor for $130 locally. It only makes sense to buy the brushless version and to run in training mode for a while.
