Anyone found a decent fix for this? I've recently installed an LRP28 in my savage with a 3 speed trans. I put a brand new cup on the front center when I installed the engine. I can't have more than a gallon on that engine (if I do, it's not much more) and that cup is severely worn already. The center cups on the diffs are also heavily worn. The only cups that don't appear to be worn much are the wheel axle/diff->wheel cups and the XL brake hub cup.

Is this still just a "savage" issue?

I have cups on my aftershock that have to have 5 gallons of LRP abuse and 6+ gallons of other engines abuse and they are the originals! As are the center axles! What has losi figured out that can withstand 10+ gallons of abuse that HPI hasn't? Is it just because of the extra offset having the trans up higher than the diffs that causes this? Is the only "fix" for this to get a LCG chassis?

Just checking.

They are the black ones, however I remember when I had a savage a few years ago, tried silvers and they didn't fair much better. The only difference was then, I ran a much weaker engine with much lower gearing at much slower top speeds.

No fix that I know of. The main problem I see with the Savage cups is the edges where the dog bone tabs hit are paper thin. I have thought about getting someone to weld a bead along those edges to beef them up, but have not gotten around to it. You would need someone that really knows what they are doing to prevent burning through the metal.

For now I just replace the cups frequently.

I had to go to MIP CVDs in the center which takes care of two drive cups on the diff inputs but I still wear out the drive cups on the gearbox. Same thing...the LPR eats drive lines.

No, but I'm contemplating getting the cup for the XL as that's the brakes/cup I have on the rear/center now. It hasn't shown hardly any wear in the same amount of run time as the others.

This is the cup:

Not sure if it will cause issues because it looks like it may be a bit longer...

That still leaves me with the cruddy cups on the input for the diffs. Since I'm running 1" extended TVP's, that rules out MIP for front/rear.

That is partially true for the extended chassis. I have the extended as well and the front MIP still fits. I have the XL style brakes on the gear box and the hub is holding up pretty good so far anyway. This is the time for me to swap stuff out since both my Savages are apart in rebuild phase right now. As far as the hub longer being a problem I am not sure of. I noticed it has a very wide mouth so i think it may be ok. I saw some custom builds that were made of tool steel (chrome-molly) that were lifetime parts. I'll be darned if I can find them now. Actually you said you Losi ones held up good right? Are the shafts the same diameter? I have done a lot of bastardizing on thing out of necessity since I have limited parts here for American based RC companies. Kinda like the roto-start off of a Savage 25 will fit a Traxxas engine if you use a different oneway bearing..... Check up on the Losi cups....Worth a try right?

I have no idea. The HPI heavy duty center trans cups are $11 a pair and the diff input cups are also $11 a pair. $22 for an entire trucks worth. Any chance you can figure out what it will cost to make a better set than what HPI offers?

I can't do it that cheap. Probably more around $40-$50 for full set. If I could sell several sets, it could get cheaper. I'll crunch some numbers tomorrow at the shop.

Funny I was thinking about you Racer when I was talking about those custom made cups and wondering if you could make them. Then there ya are chiming in.....holy crap you are good...lol!

Seems like I remember you doing those for Lessen....hmmmm...you know what I rember? the ones I saw were made from unfinished Snap-on sockets. The well of the socket didn't get milled out propperly leaving a real thick wall and they were cut down to fit. Had to be strong. I may have another super simple project for you too....I'l drop ya a PM.

Well, I'd spend $22 on a set that more than likely won't get me through a gallon of fuel... so if you have the ability to crank some out that will get 2-3 gallons of life out of, then $40-$50 would be worth it to me. All it really means is that I'd have to take half my truck apart 1/3 as often. That is one thing I'd like to be doing less!

I agree with you there! So if you and Charliejp wanted a set and so did I then that would be three and maybe it would be easier for him to do. I'm game for it.
