Winter Parking/Complete Cleaning.

Ok, I am thinking of parking my savage 21 for the winter, mostly because I never have any luck when I drive an RC in the winter, somthing always gets screwed up. Anyways, Should I tear the whole thing apart and clean everything, or should I just put a few drops of oil in the engine and pull the rope a few times to keep it lubricated internally?(what kind oil should I be doing this with, will filter oil work ok for it) Also, how hard is it to take apart the savage so that I can wash every part of it and get it nice and clean again (what should I be cleaning the parts with)? I have never taken apart the savage before and I have just gotten it in August. Not quite 1 gallon of fuel (20%) has been run through it, and it seems to be performing quite well. Any suggestions on what I should be doing with my truck so that in the spring I dont have to find problems to why the truck will not start/run properly? A how-to with pics would be ideal, but I dont think anyone will have one *crosses fingers*

On another note, I havent changed the glow plug in the truck since I bought it (its still the factory one) will it run better if I get a new one?

It makes for a great winter project. I would start by removing the engine, cleaning the outside and installing some ARO.

Winter is a good time to do a tear-down. Cleaning every part will give you a great chance to inspect all the parts for wear and breakage. You will be amazed on what you will find. Using DA and tooth brush is the best way I have found to do the job.

I normally blow the crap off and do a visual inspection after every run and tear everything down to the bone 2 times a year. If you haven't done a tear-down yet its a great learning experience.

I highly recommend doing a winter overhaul.

Ok, since I'm a noob, what is ARO and DA?

Yeah after every run I take with the truck, I usually clean it pretty good, nothing really internal for cleaning, but I just make sure the filter stays clean, and the truck generally is well kept. I dont think its in need of an overhaul yet since I havent ran a full gallon through it yet. Before Parking it I was thinking of resetting the carb to factory, and tuning from there, then tearing the engine down...etc. Also, should I have a new glow plug installed in it since its still the factory one? If I take the plug out are there any telltale signs of a wearing plug, or improper tuning from the plug?

Didn't you get a manual when you bought it? That should help you take it apart and clean and check the bearings throughout the truck. I think also put a little ATF or after run oil for the engine and a clean air filter. Also check the bearings in the clutch bell, as I learn the hard way and took out the bearings, springs and shoes. For cleaning the truck think that a soap and water with old toothbrush or cleaning brush works great as I found that engine degreaser pitted and discolor the parts. Might as well take the diff.'s apart and check them to as the bevel gears might be misalined. As this is what I plan on doing with my SS.

I agree, of course I love wrenching just as much as running.

My savage is currently all over my work bench. I have found a few items that were bent or broken that I didn't even know that were that way.

Take your time and take it completely apart. If you have never done so before, it will be a great learning experience.

I believe ARO is After Run Oil and DA is Denatured Alcohol.

I did a good general cleaning of the truck, nothing internal, just the body, shocks, tires, wheels etc. Might tear it apart this winter, prolly take pics along the way too..
