So I finally get this used HPI RS4 MT tuned and blazing along just dandy, bashing around in the backyard and having a grand old time when suddenly... no movement. I give it a few revs to see if engine is still responding. Yup, all good. Well dammit, let's go pick it up and see why it hates me this time.

I wander over, pick it up and notice that the engine seems to be... rattling. Moving independently of the chassis. Doing a little sideways boogie. Uh, that can't be good. Kill the engine and turn it over to discover I've lost 2 engine mount screws and the other 2 have a deer-in-the-headlights look as I caught them making a break for freedom.

Now for the bad news.

That my friends is a fine example of a stripped (melted) spur gear. Let this be a lesson to you. Locktite is your friend. Don't let this happen to you. Let me screw up on your behalf :)

ps: Replace with stock or go with a steel or other material spur?

I prefer to stay with the stock material. It's good to keep a 'weak' link that's easy to replace. Go with a steel spur and you'll be opening your trans when the next gear strips.

Thanks Rolex. I figured as much but wanted a second opinion. And I wasn't sure if there were stronger composites available than stock but not as unforgiving as steel. Trying to find a happy medium between melting plastic and transmission funtime. :D

been there, done that!! it sucks, SO I no longer remove the engine mount, i remove the engine from the mount. This solves the problem.

Well yep Locktite is the stuff of the gods, BUT I got the other end of the stick today. I have my dremel clamped in my hobby vice at the moment acting as a cleaning wheel as I tried and cleaning tons of used Locktite crust off the screws in my Axial's tranny. was hard work, involving spinning a nut on and off 2 or 3 times then cleaning the loose garf off with the dremel and a stiff nylon brush.

Using it is one thing. Getting it off is quite another!

I hear ya. I wonder if there is a form of locktite or similar product that can be used on metal->plastic joins without eating the plastic or being *too* strong a bond and stripping the plastic threads if you ever do need to remove. Yesterday I watched a friend have to chase a wheel that popped off my Stampede he was bashing with. The plastic-lined nut holding the wheel on went byebye.

+1 Same with every other component on an RC. Steel spurs and aluminum everything only means that the next weakest link will break.

Watch those bulkhead screws they strip and pull out pretty easy. I've got an MT2 and an MT2 18ss w/ OS engine. I've only burned 1 spur gear between the 2 so you should be allright there. There great little trucks when everythings tight and working right. Not a fan of HPI mills thow. Have fun with it and dont forget the locktite.
