Who else is making a gingerbread house?

We're doing our first house this year. Maybe start a new family tradition Anybody else ever make one or making one this year?

We are doing our first one this year also, but not from scratch. Wife bought a kit and we'll be starting on it tomorrow.

We made them as kids, mom used to spend sooo much time getting everything ready. I saw they had kits at Wally World, looked pretty cool, I might see if the kids would be interested in making one.

I guess this is probably the right time to give away the fruit cake I've been using as a door stop since I got it last Christmas.

I think there is only 1 or 2 actual fruit cakes in existence, they just keep getting re-gifted.

We made our dough last night and will be baking and assembling tonight. We decided on a layout we found online but because I can't leave well enough alone I'll be adding a little more structural interest to it. Since I happend to like Tudor style homes that's what we're gonna try to make, with some traditional decorations of course. I just thought that would be interesting.

Nice looking design Lessen!

Well we built our house today. My 4 yr old daughter wanted to get started while her little sister was taking her nap. (Note the appropriate gingerbread house building clothing.)

The kit

The house goes together pretty simply. 4 walls and a roof. I did most of the initial icing work until she decided she wanted to try it out.

Then her 1.5 yr old sister woke up and decided she wanted to join in on the fun.

Close to the finishing point the girls figured out the icing was edible.

I also made a rule that no candy can be eaten unless it falls off the house. BIG MISTAKE. For the next 10 minutes nothing managed to stay stuck to the house. :whhooo:


We managed to gitterdun with what little candy we had left.

That's great Dom! Looks like everybody had a blast. We, on the otherhand, are not doing so well. My wife contantly complains about how much our oven sucks... Well, I feel it now. We've wasted about 3/4 of a batch of dough due to underbaked pieces. It's not looking so good for our house...

We finally got a couple larger pieces to come out nicely. Took more than twice as long in the oven as the recipe calls for. I think somebody is getting a new oven for her birthday this year.

You better hope you get a dog house for Christmas then because if not where else would she put you?
