well, th problem started a couple weeks ago, but i havent really used it since. when i accelerate quickly, there is a grinding noise that i originally thought to be a dogbone that was wearing down and spinning inside the hub. last night, i took all the dogbones out, looked at them and the hubs, but its still doing it. thats when i decided to take a look in the differential cases to see if they had gone away, but they are fine, too. I'm really confused here and need some help. it doesn't do it when i slowly accelerate.it also doesn't do it when i give it full throttle in reverse

More than likely it's in your diff, and you need to check the shim before the gears get damaged. If that's what it is, the gear is 'skipping' right now, but soon you will see the teeth flattening out or breaking off.

Rolex hit it on the head, your diffs are shot. More than likley you have a flat spot, thats what happen to mine.

i took them out and looked at them and i can't see anything...is it something not visable?p

Maby, you got to look hard even a chip in the spur will give it this noise or just a small nich in the diff gear will do it. Look hard youll find it. Its only the spur with a rock or nick or the diffs. Theres not much to go wrong with a mini. I have had mine appart 100s of times.

wouldn't that make it click all the time? this only clicks and grinds when its accelerate fast, then stops at top speed.

it also doesn't click when i accelerate slow

It's normal that the first symptoms are only during hard acceleration, since that's when the maximum torque would cause the teeth to separate. At high speed, there's no major load on them. Again, check your shims.

what are the shims?

sorry, this is the 1st trouble I've ever had with differentials or anything

would spinning the spur fast make it click if it were the diffs?

Thats the one, that should solve your problems. Also your brushess might be wearing out on your motor, mine did on my reedy and it got really noisy. Just a thought.

It dosent have to be fancy to have fun, Or even be quiet for that matter.

haha, yea i know, but i am considering working a lot this summer and going at least brushless. i need to get a new engine for my savage 1st thoughh

I guess you noticed on that Tower link, that a shim kit was the first listing. It takes up the slack and wear and gives you a good mesh.

actually no i didnt

do you just add it to one side of the diffs? should i replace both diffs or just figure out which one is bad

Sometimes it's obvious. Other times you have to try it, close the diff, and make sure it's not sloppy OR binding. When you have a good mesh, your gears should give you a lot of run time without problems.
It's another thing that needs to be checked regularly.

i've always dreaded taking it apart because i stripped like every single screw on the thing when i 1st got it with a wrong sized screw driver. i have a whole list of tiny things on tower to get right now

does not oiling your diffs enough cause this? i dont even own diff oil.

NOOOO dont oil 18 diffs. I did and it caused alot of problems, if anything you might want to try putting a couple drops of teflon oil on the gears because it dosnt fly every where, but do not put diff oil in the diff cases on a rc18.

Bryson

whats teflon oil do? i got silicon oil when i bought my savage, but have no clue what its for
