Looking to start my own website. Not really sure what I want to do with it yet. I'm thinking of calling it "ponyrides.com" or "dancingbanana.us"...I'm just afraid of the pervs out there thinking the first one its something pron related.

But seriously, what hosts do you guys use? Do you prefer using one company over another to register your domains? Is there an advantage of allowing someone to host it for me rather than just getting a business package internet connection with some static IPs and host it myself?

I know some of you have your own sites and work in the web/net field so hook me up fellas!

The only real advantage of hosting it yourself is price, it's cheaper to build a crappy little machine and put apache on it and call it quits. However there are it's disadvantages. One being most ISP's do not allow you to run a server of any kind on their network, just because you paid extra for a static IP doesn't mean you can start your own server - ask your ISP first!

The second problem hosting it yourself if speed. If you plan on making a site that's nothing but a 3-4 static pages and your host allows it then go for it. If it's going to be more then just a few static pages and you expect your site to have a decent amount of traffic on it then you're killing your site as the connection from your ISP just won't be the same as if you paid a web host to do it for you.

So two things you need to know - does your ISP allow servers and do you expect your site to be busy!

As for webhosts, there are a lot of good companies out there. Dixiesys.com, alphaomegahosting.com, and ServInt.com are all companies RCNT has dealt with at one time - all companies I would strongly recommend. Since you're pretty new to web hosting I'd recommend sticking with the first two as ServInt is more geared toward larger sites and admins that know a bit about web hosting, plus the first two will be cheaper!

Hope this helps and good luck with your new website, let us know when it's up!

Hosting for a small site is so cheap these days. WoodiE covered most of the highlights above. Unless your into all the server stuff for fun, Why do it yourself?

I highly recommend http://alphaomegahosting.com/cphost.html.
For $5.00 a month you can leave all the server stuff to the pros.

They also have some great tools for setting up your site included in the package.

I've heard more bad reviews then good from Canaca. Just like you said, if it seems to good to be true then more likely it is. Just like anything else you're gonna get what you pay for, period.

I am using dreamhost and their customer support is awesome. It is expensive without promotion. I got mine for 9 bucks a year. :D

I love the unlimited MySQL database.
